Kia Motors America (KMA) has announced seven models, including the Optima, Rio, Rondo, Sedona, Sorento, Spectra and Spectra5 have achieved the U.S.-based Car Book "Best Bet"distinction. Rio and Optima are recipients of the award for the third consecutive year, while the Spectra, Spectra5 and Sorento have achieved this award for the second year in a row. In addition, Kia has broken its all- time sales record, inked a major sponsorship deal as the Official Automotive Partner of the NBA and launched its all-new Borrego midsize SUV. The Car Book 2008 is an updated and expanded guide to buying a new 2008 car, van, truck or SUV. It presents the latest safety ratings, dealer prices, fuel economy, insurance premiums, maintenance costs, tires, as well as a chart of state lemon laws, and is published in cooperation with the Center for Auto Safety, the nation's leading auto safety advocacy group. The Car Book's "Best Bet" distinction, given annually, is based on objective information collected from government and independent sources that evaluate the safety and performance needs of the American consumer. Only cars that have ratings in all of the key Car Book categories- safety features, fuel economy, rollover, front and side crash tests, maintenance and repair costs, warranties, insurance costs, and complaints, with the greatest emphasis placed on crash test performance- are considered as potential "Best Bets." A new study finds many of those infect ions could be avoided if parents who smoke would make one important change. A recent study in the archives of pediatric and adolescent medicine is giving parents another reason to quit. It finds exposure to cigarette smoke in the home increases childrens r isk of middle ear infections. The smoke inflames the tissues of the middle ear so that viruses and bacteria can invade more easily and cause infection. Whether physical or emotional, abuse attacks a childs self-esteem and emotional development, leaving long-term emotional trauma and pain. You can help prevent child abuse by being a nurturing parent or caregiver. By letting children know they are special, competent and loved, you can help them develop positive self-images and happier futures. If you feel overwhelmed, angry or frustrated as a parent, help is out there for you. Look in your area for support groups and services, or talk to a trusted friend, family member, pastor or doctor about what you can do to protect and support your child. If we all do our part to prevent child abuse, well get to the heart of the matter. 8 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, March 26, 2008 On March 5 at 5:30 a.m., I was awakened by a telephone call. When one gets a telephone call in the early morning hours, it usually is not good news. It was our Town CAO, Dennis Perlin, calling to advise me that Mr. Mayor, we have had a train derailment in Halton Hills. There were no injuries, and our firefighters and CN officials are at the scene and have everything under control. I looked out my window and could hardly see across the street as it was snowing and blowing. I viewed the wreckage later that day. It was an amazing site to see 20 rail cars heaped into a pile, many crumpled in disrepair. You should know that we have a top-notch fire department from our first responders, Captains Woods and Wilson, to Fire Safety Specialist Bruno Martina. Later, a CN official expressed gratitude to our fire department as they had arrived at the scene during a raging blizzard, had assessed and under- stood the situation, and above all, didnt panic. CN officials were also complimentary of our Fire Chief Brent Marshall. I have to also mention Deputy Chief Harry Olivieri for quarterbacking the overall response, as well as Laurel in commu- nications. CN did a terrific clean-up as the GO trains were up and running the very next day. I was assured that the site will be in a better condition than it was previous to the derailment. This was the first derailment of any major con- sequence in Halton Hills and it is fair to say that our fire department came through with flying colours. Mark your calendars for Earth Hour! The Town of Halton Hills will join with other munici- palities, businesses, organizations, and individu- als around the world to participate in this global event. At 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, the world will turn off its lights for just one hour to take a stand against climate change the greatest threat our planet has ever faced. I encourage everyone in Halton Hills to partic- ipate in this very worthwhile event to help get a message across to upper levels of government on the amount of energy being wasted. An abundance of congratulations are in order. To the 2007 Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Award win- ners: Business of the Year Giant Tiger; Entrepreneur of the Year Judith Avery; Civic Pride Club Green at Christ the King High School; Employee of the Year Dale Turnbull, Food Basics and JA Volunteer of the Year Simon Willis, CPI.
