In the Halton Hills area the company has decided to move forward with the proposed refinement route on the west side of the existing line instead of the original route proposed that would have seen the new 500kV line run down the east side of the line. The refinement route was recommended as it provides a significant socioeconomic improvement over the reference route, name- ly fewer property purchases, without creat- ing additional effects on the natural environ- ment, said Gary Schneider, Hydro One Project Director. This means that the trans- mission line would now shift from the east to the west side of the corridor starting in the vicinity of Hwy. 7 in Halton Hills. Schneider said by switching the route to the west side it avoids having to relocate five residents, which would have been required if the line had gone along the east side. He said in the case of the west side route in the Halton Hills area Hydro One still will purchase two propert ies , but in those instances there are no homes on the proper- ties. Hydro One made the decision on the route refinement following an environmen- tal, socio-economic and technical analysis of both the routes, which included information gathered through public and stakeholder consultation. Other refinement routes along the 180 km line from the Bruce Power faci l i ty in Kincardine to the transmission station in Milton were not recommend by Hydro One. Refinements were being considered in the Brockton/Hanover/West Grey and Camp Creek areas. The recommended route, which includes the change in Halton Hills, will now go for- ward to the Environmental Assessment (EA). Schneider said Hydro One hopes to get a decision from the Ministry of Environment on the terms of reference for the assessment in early April, and EA approval in early 2009. He said letters have been sent to all affect- ed landowners. Those on the east side of the line have been told they are no longer affect- ed, said Schneider. Additional information has also been sent to affected landowners on the west side. Hydro One plans to have the line in ser- vice by Dec. 2011.
