Acton/Georgetown, Friday, April 11, 2008 3 Sideroads of Halton Hills was rec- ognized in Toronto Saturday with an Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) award, The magazine, published by The Independent & Free Press, won a Special Section Premier Award for the Autumn 2007 edition. This section had a lot going for it, said OCNA judge Mary Jam- ison. The design and layout throughout the section is outstand- ing, including a good cover photo. The use of the big, bold and interesting photos set this section apart and did a good job of bringing the reader into the pages. The stories are well written and interesting as well, said Jamison. Second place went to Whitby This Week for its Faces of the Future sec- tion and Grimsby Local News took third place for a publication focus- ing on West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. The Independent & Free Press also placed second in the Premier Award judging for Best Use of Process Colour for an advertisement for Emerald Isle. The majority of Halton residents are jumping on board with the Regions new GreenCart pro- gram but its popularity has resulted in trash col- lection delays. The municipality reports that approximately 75 per cent of residents are already taking part in the initiative that sees kitchen scraps collected at the curbside for composting. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding support for our new program during this first week of our new waste collection services, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. Another change is weekly Blue Box collection, and the Region says it has seen an increase of almost 30 per cent in the amount of Blue Box materials residents are putting out. The high participation levels in both programs have resulted in some minor delays in regular garbage and recycling collection, including delays in the delivery of GreenCarts to some homes. It should be noted that those who live in apart- ments and townhouse complexes wont receive GreenCarts at this time as theyre being consid- ered for the program at a later date. In order to minimize delays in waste collection and GreenCart distribution, the Region has taken the following measures: Made arrangements to provide additional vehicles and resources to assist with the collec- tion of garbage, Blue Box and GreenCart material during the first few weeks of the new waste col- lection service. Residents who experience a delay are advised to leave the material at the curb as it will be collected as soon as possible. Stepped up its approach to complete the dis- tribution of the remaining GreenCarts. Those who receive curbside waste collection who havent received their GreenCart by Monday are advised to call the Region at (905) 825-6000 or e- mail accesshalton@halton.ca. Created a dedicated hotline for waste collection and GreenCart program inquiries. Call the afore- mentioned number to be transferred to the hotline. Held GreenCart open houses throughout the region. Visit www.halton.ca for times and loca- tions of the remaining sessions to be held, or for more information on waste collection and GreenCart distribution.
