Acton/Georgetown, Friday, April 11, 2008 7 Halton Police are investigating several com- plaints regarding Mystery Shopper want ads that have run in the classified sections of area newspapers, including The Independent & Free Press. Prospective employees have completed on- line applications and have received packages a few days later. Within the package is a bank draft. The victim is then requested to cash the bank draft, take their fee and wire the remain- der of the money to another location. The vic- tim is told they are doing a survey on the money wiring company. A few days later the bank where the draft was cashed, contacts the victim to inform them that the draft is fraudulent. The victim is held responsible and is out the money. The company in question in the complaints received is Global Intelligence Research with a web address of www.globalresearch.com Police are continuing their investigation into the complaints, but would like to remind the public that there is a legitimate Mystery Shopping Company; however it is imperative that they use caution when dealing with any- one over the Internet, and when asked to wire funds to an unknown party. Anyone with information related to the above incident it is asked to contact the Halton Regional Fraud Unit at 905-825-4777 ext. 2368 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Four mailboxes on Ninth Line were dam- aged sometime early Sunday morning. Damage is about $160. Three mailboxes on Wildwood Rd. were also damaged sometime late Saturday or early Sunday. A Georgetown man was charged with assault with a weapon after a man was crosschecked in the chest with the handle of an axe at a Mill St. residence early Tuesday morning. Police say the incident occurred after a ver- bal argument between the two escalated. The victim, a 45-year-old Georgetown man, wasnt injured. Charged is Troy Leggett, 38, of Mill St. Police report three bicycle helmets left with bicycles at Limehouse Public School Saturday afternoon, while three youths were playing at the school, were crushed and burned. The youths bikes had also been tossed against a fence at the school. Damage is $150. The suspects are described as males in their early teens seen walking a large German shep- herd. Police are investigating a break and enter into the Georgetown Optimist Hall on Trafalgar Rd. sometime between Sunday and Tuesday. A basement window was broken to gain entry. Taken was a dehumidifier, pop, alcohol, four poker sets, food, and an undisclosed amount of cash. Police are investigating an assault against a 21-year-old Georgetown man at a party at an Eighth Line home early Sunday morning. Police say two men were involved in a ver- bal altercation that escalated into a fight. Police say it is alleged that other men assisted in assaulting the victim. The man received minor injuries. Wendy Hammond of Acton is $25,000 richer thanks to a recent purchase of a Bingo Gift Pack. The winning ticket was bought at Shoppers Drug Mart in Georgetown Market Place. The Cup is awarded to the Ontario municipality with the largest life- saving program in communities with a population between 50,000 and 100,000. Halton Hills beat out Waterloo, Pickering, Ajax and Newmarket among other communites. In 2007 there was a 42 per cent increase in attendance of Recreation & Parks aquatic training programs with more significant increases in the Canadian Swim Patrol Star, Bronze Star and Basic First Aid programs.
