Two events that will make a posi- tive difference to the local environ- ment are the Fourth Annual 20 Minute Makeover set for Friday and Clean Up Day 2008 on Saturday. During the Fourth Annual 20 Minute Makeover area employees and school children are encouraged to spend 20 minutes doing a quick but effective litter pick up in their immediate neighbourhoods. Last years event saw town employees taking the lead with all departments and facility staff heading outdoors to pick up trash at a wide variety of public locations. Eight businesses officially regis- tered their participation as well as the Acton and Downtown Georgetown Business Improvement Areas. School participation shot up last year to 25 out of 26 participating. Organizers are hoping for 100 per cent participation this year. Free gloves and bags will be sup- plied to the schools. All businesses and schools participating this year should contact the Works Department at 905-873-2601 ext. 2610 to register and make arrange- ments for bags and gloves. Hundreds of area residents and organizations are set to hit the streets, parks, trails, vacant lots and rural roads for Clean Up Day 2008 Saturday. (Rain date is April 26). Everyone is asked to clean up a par- ticular area of town that is important to them. It could be their own road allowance or perhaps a neighbour- hood park or ravine. The Town doesnt have the staff to clean up all areas and relies on volun- teers to take a couple of hours to make a difference. We encourage everyone to get out and do a little clean up because litter is becoming more and more obvious by the moment, said Halton Hills Wards 3/4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal, also Litter Free Halton Hills Task Force chair. She added high school students can use their clean up hours for their volunteer requirements if the hours can be veri- fied. Free garbage bags and gloves are available for participants at the Town Works Yard on Trafalgar Rd., Acton BIA office, Downtown Georgetown BIA office and Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce. Once a person or group has cho- sen an area to clean up they are asked to call the Town of Halton Hills Works Department at 905-873-2601 ext. 2610 to let Town staff know your plans. They will provide callers with information on how to get garbage bags and have the litter they collect picked up. Last year more than 12 tonnes of litter and debris and 14 tandem loads in total of scrap metal, wood and tires were collected. The Town of Halton Hills recently drew the names of Earth Hour partic- ipants who won an Energy Efficient Gift Basket valued at $500 each. The winners, all residents of Georgetown, were: Melanie Franke, Donna Seelman, and Mark Ewer. The bas- kets contained energy efficient light bulbs, ceiling fans, energy meter and programmable thermostat. 20 Minute Makeover In preparation for the fourth annual Halton Hills 20 Minute Makeover April 18, Town of Halton Hills staff and councillors (from left) Ted Drewlo, Mayor Rick Bonnette, and regional councillors Clark Somerville and Jane Fogal have been testing the garbage bags as they prepare to take part cleaning up the town. The event encourages people to spend 20 minutes picking up litter around their businesses, neighbourhoods, schools and other public areas. Free gloves and bags will be supplied to schools taking part this year. For information contact the Towns Works Department at 905-873- 2601 ext. 2610. Photo by Ted Brown Actons Superior Glove Works has donated 6,500 pairs of disposable gloves for the volunteers partaking in Halton Hills upcoming Earth Day cleanup around Acton and Hornby. Its fitting gesture for the local business as the second-largest glove manufacturer in Canada. This marks their fifth year in helping make Earth Day a success, and the second year that they have contributed to the schools efforts. Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonette accepts the gloves from Superior Glove president Tony Geng, and art direc- tor Greg Stubbs. Superior Glove Works donates gloves
