In recent weeks, the question often was, Is spring ever going to get here? The winter has definitely made its presence known in the last while and enough is enough. When it does, then everything starts to come together in a raging fury. Windows are spit and cleaned, the house scrubbed down and the chores in the yard are started. Along with that, the barbecues start getting dragged out of the deep, dark caverns of garages, sheds and the cobwebs. Hibernating over the winter months, there may also be thoughts of replacing that aging dinosaur with a brand new stainless steel unit with all the bells and whistles on it. Rear infra-red burners, rotisserie, side burners and the like, to sizzle up the steaks and burgers to perfection are dreamed of. However, once reality sets in and you wake up, out comes Old Faithful. Before trying to fire up these appliances though, Staff of the Halton Hills Fire Protection & Prevention Services wants every- body to follow a few simple tips to make your barbecuing season a little safer: 1. Clean all the gas discharge ports of the burner system with a pipe cleaner. 2. Closely inspect the burner for any rust perforations and replace if there is. 3. Check the gas supply hose for any wear and tear or cracks. Replace the hose if there are any. 4. Check all the connections with a 50/50 soap/water solution looking for bubbles while doing so. 5. Never light the barbecue with the hood down. 6. Turn the fuel supply off first before turn- ing the burner off. This allows the fuel in the supply line to be burned off first. 7. Burns are very, very painful and serious. Keep an eye on small children at all times when near the barbecue. Fire Chief Brent Marshall says, While we do respond to a number of calls for barbecue fires over the year, he adds, Taking a bit of time to follow our suggestions will certainly reduce the chance of coming to your home. Chief Marshall would also like to add If you didnt take the opportunity of replacing the batteries in your smoke alarms when you changed the clocks, I strongly encourage you to do so, adding, Give you and your family that extra few seconds in the event an emer- gency does happen.
