Acton/Georgetown, Friday, April 25, 2008 21 ENTERTAINMENT The Georgetown Choral Society, under the leadership of A. Dale Wood, is gearing up for their upcoming spring concert, The Power of Voice. The 100-voice community choir will perform some of the best-loved choral works from popular and clas- sical composers such as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mozart, Vivaldi and Handel among others. They will be singing a collection of light opera and famous composi- tions from productions such as Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Carmen, Hansel & Gretel, Gilbert & Sullivan and many more. There are serious and light moments of the concert particularly when the choir will tease the audience with a comical spoof on ppera, entitled Painless Opera. The piece quotes five famous operas by Mozart, Rossini, Bizet, Puccini and Verdi and puts the famous opera music to a collection of comical lyrics. Bev Foster will be accompanying the choir on piano. She is an experi- enced performer, songwriter and music educator. She has taught music in the elementary and sec- ondary panels in Ontario and oper- ated a private studio. Foster has been the executive director of the Ontario Vocal Festival and accom- panist for the Orpheus Choir of Toronto. The Choral Society brings musi- cal variety and quality to all perfor- mances and this concert will be no exception. Their conductor, Wood, continues to strive for excellence and encourages each singer to work towards their personal best. The choir is made up of people from all walks of life at all ages and they are very proud to have several grad- uates of the Georgetown Childrens Chorus (GCC) joining them this year. Their membership continues to grow as these young singers move up into the adult choir. Wood leads the GCC as well as the Achill Choral Society in the Hockley Valley area. He juggles all the choirs, as well as teaching piano and voice lessons, and shows an equal amount of energy and enthu- siasm to all. In addition, Wood has also composed Christmas Cantatas for all three choirs. Several choir members of GCS have been involved in the choir under his leadership since 1975, quite an amazing following and clearly demonstrates the level of commitment he and the members have to bringing the arts and music scene alive in the Halton Hills area. Wood is an experienced and highly talented musician and GCS has been blessed to have him as their conductor over the years and look forward to working with him for concert seasons to come. GCS has performed in Toronto at the Roy Thompson Hall, in Mississauga at the Living Arts Centre and recently performed at a memori- al service in North York where they performed Mozarts Requiem. The choir has also traveled abroad, most recently to Ireland, as well as Holland and England. Join the choir on May 2 and May 3 for the performance of The Power of Voice held at the Georgetown Christian Reformed Church, 11611 Trafalgar Rd. Tickets are $20 and are available at Bergsmas Paint & Wallpaper (Georgetown Market Place), The Freckled Lion (56 Main St., Georgetown) and Alexandre (333 Mountianview Rd. South) from any choir member or on their web- site at www.georgetownchoral.ca. Hundred-voice choir brings The Power of Voice JENNIFER VANDERDRIFT Georgetown Choral Society A. DALE WOOD
