Halton Regional Police Staff Sgt. Peter Hodgson said 95 per cent of Halton motorists checked during the Provincial Seatbelt Campaign that ran from April 16 to 27 were wearing their seatbelts thats higher than the 92 per cent provincial average. In total during the campaign, 863 people received tickets for not buck- ling up. Throughout the campaign, volun- teers with Communities on Phone Patrol (COPPS) checked vehicles at major intersections throughout the region. Of the 23,900 vehicles checked, 1,350 people werent wearing seat- belts. Also, Educational Services officers worked with students who conduct- ed seatbelt checks at local schools. About 1,475 cars were checked near the schools resulting in six tickets and eight warnings being issued. Road safety will continue to a pri- ority for Halton Police said Hodgson. Although the provincial cam- paign is over, officers will still be on the lookout for the five per cent who still havent got the message and fail to buckle up, said Hodgson.
