The speed signs have a number on it and if you go faster than that number, you could get a ticket. The moment someone travels even one kilometre above the posted limit, they have technically commit- ted the offence of speeding. With the offence com- plete, any increase in speed from that point is all about the penalty. I have heard speeders argue, I wasn t going 30 over... I was only going 15 over! Either way they were st i l l speeding. With todays advanced, accurate and eff- ective speed lasers and radars, Im going with the 30 over. Rememberwhen you choose your speed, you choose your fine. Lets talk tolerance levels for a second. I can admit that I have never written a ticket for one km over the limit (thatll cost you $17.50 by the way). We do try to be reasonable with how we enforce the laws, based on the circumstances surrounding the offence. I have heard people say, Just dont do 20 km-h over the limit and the police wont bother you. Nice theory, but not true. In some places our tolerance levels are extremely low (i.e. 10 km-h over the speed limit or lower). Good examples of lower tolerance areas are Community Safety Zones (CSZ) and constructions zones, where lower speed tolerance and increased fines are the norm. Driving 20 km-h over the posted limit will normal- ly cost you $95. Doing the same speed in the CSZ on Mountainview Road just north of the hollow (an area targeted regularly) will cost you $180. Drive 30 km-h (or more) over the limit in a CSZ or construction zone where workers are present and you will find yourself summonsed to court explaining your choices to a Justice of the Peace (and the possibility of fines in excess of $500). Road safety begins with each driver assuming responsibility and accountability for their actions. Everyone who slides behind the wheel makes deci- sions about how they drive their speed, their turn signals, following distances and levels of cooperation with other drivers. A driver may not be able to control the other cars on the road, but they are certainly in charge of their vehicle, and are accountable for their driving choices. Please choose to drive in a manner that contributes to the overall safety of our community. Sgt. Derek Davis is the supervisor of the 1 District Response Unit, focusing on traffic enforcement within the communities of Halton Hills and Georgetown You choose your speed; you choose your fine Sgt. Derek Davis Development is proceeding on Dominion Gardens Park with the construction of a splash pad and wash- room building, lit pathways, allotment gardens and seating and entry walls. During the course of construction which is expect- ed to last until August, the Town of Halton Hills Recreation & Parks advises that the playground will be closed, along with periodic closures of sections of the Dominion Gardens Drive entrance. Construction access will be from Maple Avenue and Guelph Street, but not from Dominion Gardens Drive or Christ the King Secondary School. The project s contractor is D.D.R. Landscape Contractors, Ltd.
