Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 7, 2008 23 SENIORS LIFESTYLES We have a tentative total of monies raised by the Rock-a-thon held at Sobeys on April 18 and 19. Thanks to the generosity of many people we raised almost $7,000, which will provide much needed funds for our everyday expenditures at the Acton Seniors Centre. There are still quite a few prizes waiting to be picked up. Check that ticket tucked away in your wallet; you may be a winner. If you find a ticket, phone 519-853-5951 and the person on the desk will be happy to help you. The last date or picking up your prize is May 16. Last Wednesday the Georgetown and Acton Seniors went to Rama. The 50/50 was won by Mary Van der Sanden. Celebrating birthdays were Shirley Beaumont, Mike George and Marian Pascoe. Sitting in the lucky seats were Isabel Nicholls, Mary Walsma, Ruth Burke, Edna George, Rose Batten and Rita Court. Note the next trip to Rama will be on a Tuesday for a change May 27. The carpet bowlers had an enjoyable after- noon and Betty Blaines Black team beat Marg Harings Brown team, 16-7. Marg said Peggy would have been proud of the Black team. The Art Class will resume on Wednesday, May 7 and the Paper Tole class is every Thursday at 7 p.m. Is anyone interested in learning how to create a three-dimensional picture by cutting and layering pieces of a picture. The results are quite stunning. This weekend is our Spring Bazaar (May 10). Please try and take the time to drop in. It starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. You can buy lunch, lots of delicious baking, crafts and knitting, plants (indoor and out), and a great variety of paperback books. I always like to pick up a few paperback books, then if I am traveling, I can read them and happily leave them for someone else to enjoy. If anyone would like to donate baked goods or items for the various tables, please bring them to the Centre either Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. or Saturday before 10 a.m. I am hoping for nice weather on May 16 as a group of Gals on the Go and Hikers are going to either hike, or enjoy the gardens of the Royal Botanical Gardens. There is still room, if you would like to join us. Last Monday, 59 Gals on the Go and Leather Town Lassies (Red Hats) with a sprinkling of men went to the Mohawk Raceway. We enjoyed the buffet dinner, and some had a little flutter on the horses. A few went to the Casino and tried their luck on the machines. I enjoyed the excitement of watching the horses run. Next week will be busy at the centre. On Monday, May 12 we will be having our social dinner and the Gang from the Hill will be providing the entertainment. The Birthday Tea is the next day and we will be celebrating all birthdays in May and June. You should receive a phone call if your birthday falls during these two months and you may bring a guest if you wish. The centre will be closed on Monday, May 19 for Victoria Day, and will re-open on Tuesday at 9 a.m. as usual. Evening euchre will be on Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. If you enjoy euchre come out and join us. At the Thursday afternoon Bid Euchre, there were two mooners: Betty Brewer and Muriel Dzierla. It was nice to see Edna Nellis home and playing euchre after her winter escape. The news is out! Congratulations Terri. Terri Forbes has been awarded the position of co-ordinator of the Georgetown Seniors Centre. She will permanently replace Kristen who has resigned and is moving to Sudbury. We would also like to welcome Sherry Mitchell as she takes up her full-time posi- tion at our Centre as administrative assistant. Congratulations Sherry. We know we have a great team in you and Terri together. Did you get a chance to take part in the busy week at the Centre? It began on Monday, April 28 with the Geri Sale and Fashion Show. Although attendance was down, those present enjoyed the parade of models in their finery. Sales were brisk fol- lowing the show. Jewelry from the Fifth Avenue Collection of jewelry presented by Lynda Prain made the fashions even more beautiful. Many of the guests will be sporting new necklaces, pins, earrings, and bracelets to go with the new duds. Wednesday, April 30, Liz Hardstaff, Seniors co-ordinator-Meal Program for Links2Care provided a lunch for about 50 members. This was to showcase the frozen meals available to purchase. I must say it was a very tasty lunch of salad, lasagne, chocolate cake and ice cream. This is anoth- er source to provide well planned nutrition- al meals for those who live on their own. It is very possible they will be back to do this again. Thanks Liz and we do hope to see you again soon And now a look into the future for whats coming up at our Centre. Arrangements have been made to start the next Computer Course in June. Start date has not been set yet so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more news. Saturday, May 24 is the date for the Annual Yard Sale. Great opportunity to get rid of those treasured items that have become dust collectors. Due to the difficulty getting rid of left over things they are asking that you do not bring clothing, shoes, TVs, record players, and large furniture. All items can be dropped off at the Centre on Friday, May 23. Sale runs from 6 a.m. to noon. Help is needed to price, set-up, sell and clean-up after. Call Terri or Sherry if you have some time. All proceeds from the Yard Sale go to the Centre. Community Unity Day on Saturday, May 10 will be held in Cedarvale Park from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event is an initia- tive of the Georgetown and area Ministerial Association. Please join all of the churches in town as they host this event to promote unity in our community. Work crews are going out in the morning to help seniors in need of help to clean up their yards and with other odd jobs. Activities in the afternoon at Cedarvale Park will include Seniors Tea Room, barbecue hotdogs and drinks, games, and entertain- ment. And the nice part is that it is all FREE! Something else you wont want to miss is the S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) free community presentation on Wednesday, May 14 at St. Albans Church, Acton. Time is from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Topics are Seniors Personal Safety with pre- senter: Maureen Andrews, and Seniors Driving Safety with presenters Jackie Brennan and Keith Black. There will also be refreshments. Join the winning team at the Georgetown Seniors Centre. Keep posted to this column for other upcoming events.
