Photo by Jon Borgstrom Puppet love With spring cleanups underway for many area resi- dents, Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services reminds people of the need to obtain a burn permit if they plan to burn any brush or tree trim- mings. The burn permit process includes a number of safeguards against fires by the constant monitoring of wind conditions, smog and heat advisories and mois- ture conditions, which all play a very significant role in the prevention of fires, said Fire Chief Brent Marshall. Twenty or 30 minutes out of your day is all it would take to obtain a permit and a few safety tips from our staff. Burn permits are also required for recreational bon- fires even if it is contained in a chimenea or factory built fire pot. It is not unusual to see a sharp increase of grass/brush fires in the spring. Grass fires fueled by strong wind have the ability to destroy a number of acres very quickly before being brought under control by fire crews, said Marshall. He added very few fires actually occur on the prop- erties of those who have a permit. To obtain a permit the applicant must complete an application and forward the appropriate fee to Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services, 53 Maple Ave., Georgetown. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applications are available at either the Acton or Georgetown fire stations, the Public Education Information Centre at Georgetown Market Place or online at www.haltonhills.ca. Burn permit fees are $20 for recreational or resi- dential and $200 for commercial or construction. There is no charge for a fire burn permit.
