The Rebels tied their season-opening game with Miltons Bishop Reding 5-5, then defeated visiting Acton by a lopsided mercy rule score on Tuesday. Team Ontario under-18 pitcher Brad Dilks of GDHS didnt allow a Bearcat to reach base in four innings of work, while Stanwyck, Trevor Rahim and Stephen McDonald were the big offensive contributors for the Rebels. Photos by Tim McDonald With a full scholarship to the University of Vermont in his grasp, field lacrosse player Ryan Haynes still has some team goals to accomplish in his final year at a New York State prep school. The 17-year-old Georgetown resident says that he and his Trinity-Pawling teammates have undergone a collective attitude change in their quest to earn a New England-area championship later this month. A third-year player, Haynes is second on the Pride in scoring with 39 goals in 13 games and the team is enjoying one of its best-ever campaigns with a 9-0 record in the Founders League West Division I, fol- lowing a less-than-sparkling 24-33 mark over the past five seasons. Weve got 18 seniors on the team and all of our offence came back. Were hoping to win New Englands for the first time in a while I think its like 20 years, Haynes said. In the past couple of years, we were so worried about our record and how many points we were get- ting, that no one really wor- ried about the little things that make you win games. Now were just going out and playing our different roles and buying into a team concept. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound attackman also had 36 goals in 2007 as Trinity-Pawling finished 9-6. He has teamed up with Orangevilles Mike Teeter to make a dangerous offensive str ike duo, with Haynes scoring seven goals in a 13-8 win over Canterbury. Ryans been a crucial part of our team because hes a serious inside threat who is our go-to guy on offence, said Trinity-Pawlings varsity head coach, Joe Tweed. Hes a very smart player with a great set of hands who can stickhandle in a phone booth and hes been a leader on the field for us as well. Haynes has also deftly worked his way on to the schools honour roll and is one of six Pride players to receive NCAA Division I scholarships this year. He will take arts and sciences courses at Vermont starting in September, having yet to decide on a major field of study. Back home school wasnt my favourite thing, but Ive really matured and because of the way the program is structured here it helped me to become more disci- plined. Its made me realize that you have to do well at school if youre going to succeed at anything. For the summer, Haynes will be back for another season with the Toronto Jr. A Beaches box squad, after scoring five goals in 11 games with that Ontario Lacrosse Association club last year. Trinity-Pawlings biggest league win of the season was a comeback 12-11 win over Sal isbury of Conneticut, despite five goals from Georgetowns Cameron Flint for the Crimson Knights. Haynes and Flint played together on the Halton Hills midget field Bulldogs that claimed a Canadian championship in 2006. Caledons Mike Burke also plays for Trinity- Pawlings varsity side and will rejoin the Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs in early June.
