Photo by Donavon Gaudette With Monday marking the start of National Nursing Week, the Region is cele- brating the contributions made by nurses throughout Halton. Nurses play an integral role in providing public and regional health services, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. On behalf of regional council and Halton Region employees, I d like to thank our nurses for their hard work and commitment to improving the health of Halton residents, he said. The Regions nurses assist individuals of all ages, including those in long-term care homes. Nurses caring for seniors collaborate with members of the health care team to meet the physical, spiritual, social and psy- chological needs of residents, protect the privacy and confidentiality rights of resi- dents and their families and provide resi- dents with around-the-clock care. Long-term care nurses display leadership through their roles as advocates for resi- dents, said Halton Commissioner of Social and Community Services Adelina Urbanski. Their priori ty continues to be cl ient- focused care delivery. Their skills and com- mitment make them an important part of our long-term care team. Nurses working for the Halton Region Health Department and the department of Social and Community Services also: Give information to women to help them be healthy before, during and after pregnancy Provide parents with the support they need to promote their childs healthy growth and development and feel confident as par- ents Provide consultation and support to schools and community agencies working with children and youth to promote healthy growth and development and reduce risky behaviours Offer information and advice on immu- nization, travel health, sexual health, com- municable diseases and infection control Investigate outbreaks of communicable diseases Provide consultation and support for positive mental health and mental illness for clients in schools and the community Promote healthy lifestyles in the com- munity and workplaces. Our nurses have the knowledge and expertise required to meet the public health needs of Halton residents, said Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal.
