The theme for this years event is Homes and Dreams and the focus is on providing seniors and their caregivers with information about what they can do to make their homes safer now and in the future. It will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Halton Regional Centre, located at 1151 Bronte Rd., Oakville. Everyone should have the opportunity to live safely and inde- pendently in their own home for as long as they can, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. Halton Region has a vision that our programs and services support seniors to live their lives their way and the Homes and Dreams event exemplifies this by providing information and resources to help seniors maintain their independence. Guest speakers at the event will include Shawn Montieth, known as Canadas Handyman, and Jamie Shipley from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Montieth will talk about home renovations that can make a home safer and more accessible for seniors, while Shipley will talk about the things that need to be considered when hiring contractors. Additionally, staff from the Region will make a presentation about how to prevent falls. We know that it is the wish of many seniors to stay in their home for as long as possible, said Adelina Urbanski, the Regions commission- er of social and community services. Falls cause a decline in health for seniors which often lead to long- term stays in hospitals or long-term care homes, so by providing seniors in Halton with information about resources they can access to make their home safer, we are helping people to live independently longer. Those who attend the event will also have the opportunity to view dis- plays set up by local businesses and non-profit agencies that offer services and resources to help seniors live safely for longer in their own homes. Anyone interested in attending is asked to call 905-825-6000 to regis- ter. Transportation is available for seniors and caregivers. Region celebrates seniors
