Ground was officially broken for the two new Georgetown fire stations Tuesday afternoon. The stations one located at Eighth Line north of 10 Sideroad and the other, a joint Fire/EMS sta- tion, at the current location of the Maple Ave. fire station will be built simultaneously and are to be completed next spring. Both stations will be built to LEED environmen- tal certification silver standards and will include geothermal heating and cooling, water conservation technologies and the use of recycled materials for construction. The final design of these two new stations was a result of extensive dialogue with the staff of the Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services, said Fire Chief Brent Marshall. When complete, these stations will provide our firefighters state-of-the-art, energy-efficient facilities from which to deliver enhanced fire protection, prevention, pub- lic education and emergency medical services to our community. Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette said the con- struction of the stations plays a significant role in protecting our citizens from the ravages of fire today, and for future generations. Our community places great value in the vision of improving and protecting the quality of life for its citizens, said Bonnette. The Maple Ave. joint fire/EMS station will be built behind the current building on the seven-acre site. While construction is ongoing, fire operations from the Maple Ave. station will be unaffected. When complete, it will provide better access to the east side of Georgetown from a newly constructed road off Armstrong Ave. The Georgetown South station will be the departments headquarters. The cost to build the two stations is $9.4 million. Funding is coming from the Town of Halton Hills ($6.4 million), Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure Renewal ($1.9 million) and Halton Region ($1.1 million for the Emergency Medical Service portion. Halton Hills Hydro is also a funding partner assist- ing with geothermal heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The Province of Ontario is proud to partner with Halton Hills in the construction of these facili- ties, said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. Through investments such as these, the Province of Ontario is delivering on one of the largest investment programs in genera- tions that will lead to nothing less than a renais- sance in Ontarios public infrastructure. Halton Region Chair Gary Carr said the con- struction of the joint fire/EMS station created an opportunity for a partnership for the delivery of both fire and emergency medical service from a sin- gle site. This partnership not only maximizes the deliv- ery of services but also provides for the efficient use of regional and municipal tax dollars, said Carr. Rand General Contractors from King City, Ontario will build the stations. Fire stations construction begins LISA TALLYN Staff Writer
