Ft. 4 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, June 25, 2008 Halton Police will be taking part in the province-wide Safe Prom Campaign that focuses on drivers getting home safely on their prom and graduation night. Throughout this week, Halton Police will have officers out running RIDE spot checks to deter drinking and driving after a prom or graduation. A provincially-funded initiative will add enforcement to the project. The spot checks will be set up throughout the region and will focus on high-traffic areas as well as rural areas. Schools have been notified in advance of the campaign in an effort to provide the greatest amount of deterrence. Tips for eliminating impaired driving: Dont risk it if you plan to drive, dont drink. Choose a sober designated driver before partying. Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a friend to drive you home. Spend the night where the activity is being held. Immediately report impaired drivers to police. Always wear your seatbelt its the best defence against an impaired driver. Halton Police remind everyone that impaired driving is a crime in progress and asks people to use their cell phones to call 911 if they know or suspect a driver is impaired. Also, police encourage residents to notify police if they see crowds of youth congregat- ing in areas they shouldnt be.
