This time I have something a little different for you I am going to tell you how to find great books for yourself. If you have been to the library before, you may have asked a question like My friend told me about this fabulous mystery series which involves two cats living in an apple barn. Do you know which books I mean? And with a flutter of fingers over a keyboard, we library staff magically say, Yes, of course, right this way, and the books in question are found. Well, magicians may never reveal their secrets, but library folk are happy to share. One of our best tricks is Novelist. Novelist is an online database of books: fiction, non-fic- tion, childrens, teens and adults. The won- derful thing about Novelist is that it includes an enormous amount of full text: reviews, summaries, subjects, first chapters, essays, book-club guides and more. What does that mean to you? Well, it means you can search seemingly ridiculous descriptions of books (mystery cats apple barn) and find the answer in a flash (Lillian Jackson Brauns The Cat Who Mysteries). Pretty cool, dont you think? Heres how to do it: Go to the librarys website at www.library.hhpl.on.ca, from the menu down the middle of the page, click on Book Lovers, and then click on the lavender Novelist link. Now heres the magical secret. Just under the Novelist logo, there are two links written in white: Home and Advanced Search. Select Advanced Search. Type your three-or-four-word book descrip- tion into the box beside Find, select TX All Text in the next box and click on Search. Abracadabra! And you dont have to just use a description to search. Say you are really in the mood for a humorous novel about a sad sub- ject, searching happy sad will bring up all sorts of great reading suggestions. So, next time you are looking for a particu- lar book or you need ideas about what to read next, why not give Novelist a try? But dont forget that Novelist is not the only trick we library folk have up our sleeves. We are always happy to help you find reading sugges- tions.
