The Bulldogs scored a 7-6 triumph in the contest to sweep their OLA best-of-5 quarterfinal 3-0 and will now face either the Green Gaels of Clarington or the Mimico Mountaineers in the next round, with a game likely to take place Saturday night in Georgetown beginning at 7:30 p.m. Photo by Eamonn Maher For the second year in a row, the Halton Hills Bulldogs have made it to the second round of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B playoffs, thanks to a dramatic 7-6 victory at home Saturday evening that eliminated the Newmarket Saints in a three-game sweep. The Bulldogs will likely host a second-round game Saturday night at the Alcott Arena, although given the cur- rent fiasco surrounding the East Conference quarterfinal series between the top-ranked Oakville Buzz and eighth- place Akwesasne Lightning, scheduling agreements arent exactly set in stone in the OLA. As of press time Tuesday, the fourth-place Dogs were awaiting last night's result of the controversial fifth-and- deciding game between Oakville and Akwesasne that was played in the neutral site of Bowmanville. If the Buzz won, Halton Hills would face the second-place Clarington Green Gaels in a best- of-5 rematch of the 2007 East Conference final, probably start- ing Thursday in Bowmanville. Should the upstart Lightning have pulled off the shocker over Oakville, the Bulldogs would take on their bitter rival, the Mimico Mountaineers, who finished the regular season as the sixth seed in the conference. Whoever the opposition proves to be, Bulldog head coach Blaine McCauley expects a tough test for his relative- ly young squad. They won the season series with Mimico 3- 1-0 that featured some intense battles and lost their lone game to the host Gaels 11-10 on May 8 in one of the best games of the year. Both have solid teams and what we're still excited about is how we handled step one against Newmarket, learned a little bit more and now we're ready for step two, McCauley said of his side's elimination of the fifth-seeded Saints, the only first-round sweep in the East Conference. Mimico would be a fun series and we had a great series in the final with the Gaels last year. Both have very similar styles of play. The Green Gaels play tough defensively and are quick in transition. Mimico is rough and physical, but they also have some talented forwards. We'll have a regular practice (Tuesday) and focus on things that we'll have to do to be successful. Once we know who we're playing, we'll work on more specific things at Wednesday's practice. Third-year vet Nic Grasby provided the heroics for the Bulldogs on Saturday, combining with Kyle Davis to score on a basketball-like set play with only five seconds remain- ing in the third period to pull out the one-goal victory, just under a minute after the Saints had tied the score after pulling their goalie. Davis sparked his side in the second period with two quick goals that negated a 3-1 Newmarket lead. Grasby (2), Pat Saunders, Evan Whillans and Chad Cummings also scored for the hosts on Saturday. After beating the Saints soundly in game one, Halton Hills managed wins of 6-5 and 7-6 in the last two contests, well under their average of 11 goals per night on offence during the regular season. Seeded seventh in the under-18 girls Tier I divi- sion, Kosziwka and Nixon needed a third-set tiebreaking 15-13 victory over a duo from the Aurora Storm to take the championship match. After some time off to recover from injuries, the 17-year-old Acton High School graduates are back in action this weekend for another tourna- ment in Cobourg, this time in the womens 21-24 age group.
