Photo by Ted Brown A Scarborough woman is dead after she drowned in a friends back- yard swimming pool in Acton Friday evening. Halton Regional Police Detective Ron Hansen said the woman, Shanshan Kuang, 31, was swimming with her friends five-year-old daughter in the shallow end of an in-ground pool at the home on Churchill Rd. N. when the childs mother, the resident of the home, went inside to get some fresh towels. Police believe the woman, who they say wasnt a strong swimmer moved to where the bottom of the pool slopes to the deep end and she went under water and could not get back up. Hansen said the little girl, who was wearing a life-jacket, attempted to pass a pool noodle to the woman but when she couldnt get to her she screamed for her mom. Police say the childs mother came running out of the house, screamed, and a neighbour rushed to help. The man pulled the woman from the pool and started CPR until emergency services personnel arrived and took over. The woman was transported to Georgetown Hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy was done and Hansen said it showed, there was no indication she had a pre-existing medical condition. He added, there was also no indi- cation drugs or alcohol were involved, however, they are still awaiting final results. Police are not treating the death as suspicious. It doesnt matter how old you are. Anyone can drown in a matter of minutes, said Hansen. Woman, 31, drowns in Acton pool A 45-year-old North York man died Tuesday afternoon after falling through an opening in a ceiling to the concrete floor approximately 40 feet below in an industrial building under construction on Fifth Line just north of Steeles Avenue in Halton Hills. Halton Police, who did not release the mans name pending notifica- tion of next of kin, said he was inspecting ductwork in the ceiling when the accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. The man died at the scene. The Ministry of Labour is investigating. The fatality is the second one in the 401 Corridor area this year. Steven Lundy, 23, of Brantford died April 22 when he fell 50 ft. into the sewage pumping station shaft at the Halton Region pumping station site on Steeles Ave. near Sixth Line.
