Some people actually prefer to take their summer vacation closer to the end of the so- called summer months. Their reasoning being that they have experienced it to be a little less busy and hectic. It also gives them a shorter waiting period at the end before school starts and the kids are back to their busy routines. It doesnt really matter when the vacations are taken, life takes on a whole new meaning for us. It usually means an over-abundance of food/snacks, traveling to different points of interests, swimming, hiking and biking for some. But the thoughts to play safe, is a must. Too often, serious and sometimes fatal accidents happen because our minds are pre- occupied with different thoughts. We need to remain vigilant in our activities at all times. We also need to realize that others can be preoccupied with their thoughts and actions. Because of that, our chances of injury have also doubled. That is a deadly cocktail to think about. For those who may not know, Risk Watch is an excellent injury prevention program for children Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8. It is designed to help children and families create safer homes and communities by teaching students the knowledge and critical thinking skills they need to make positive choices about their personal injury prevention behaviours. Risk Watch is a proven and effective educational program designed for our most precious commodity, our children. These eight components are areas specific to the injuries being experienced by our chil- dren today. Motor vehicle safety Fire and burn prevention Choking, suffocation and strangulation prevention Poisoning prevention Falls and playground injury prevention Firearms injury prevention Bike and pedestrian safety Water and ice safety Teaching our children the information they need to recognize risks and by teaching them the skills to make educated choices about the risks in their lives, we can reduce both the occurrence and the consequences of unintentional injury. With education, motivation and the sup- port of caring adults, children can learn to practise behaviour to avoid unintentional injuries. Learning and practising from Risk Watch can make a difference all year around, not just vacation time.
