LEASE For breaking news go to: www.independentfreepress.com Halton Hills award-winning newspaper It seemed like a good idea at the time An Acton man is facing several charges after a two-and-a-half-hour standoff with Halton Police Friday afternoon. Off icers were cal led to a Churchill Rd. apartment building at about 4 p.m. for a report of a man behaving irrationally. Police say when they arrived the man became agitated and con- frontational and charged at an offi- cer with a large butcher knife in a hallway in the building. According to police the man then retreated into his apartment. Police established perimeters both inside and outside the build- ing and the service s Tactical Rescue Unit (TRU) was called in. Police say the man threw knives at the officers from his fourth-floor balcony, narrowly missing them. TRU officers negotiated with the man to surrender and at one point the man came out of his apartment carrying a knife and approached a TRU officer. Police say the man was subdued with a Taser, and arrested about 6:30 p.m. The man was taken to hospital as a precaution because of the use of the Taser. He was not injured, and released. Charged with one count of pos- session of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, five counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of breach of probation is Jerry John Schendal , 41, of Churchill Rd. S.
