It is important for everyone to help make sure our roads are the safest they can be. When it comes to school bus travel, its very important for our young peo- ple to arrive safely. Despite the fact that school buses are acknowledged as one of the safest forms of travel, there is an obligation on each and every one of us to keep it that way. There seems to be a lot of confusion around a motorists responsibility when con- fronted with a school bus. I hope to clarify some of those issues and correct any misconceptions you may have. Whether on a city street, highway or county road and regardless of the speed limit or number of lanes motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing. The only exception to this is when the highway is separated by a median. In this situation traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop. Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move. Drivers meeting a school bus on a highway must stop before reaching the bus, drivers approaching a school bus from the rear must stop at least 20 metres before reaching the bus. Other need to know items con- cerning school buses: Do not park or stop in designated school bus loading zones, the area is designated for a reason to keep our children safe when embarking or dis- embarking When a school bus is stopped at a railway crossing as required by law, this is not an opportunity for you to get past the bus. The Highway Traffic Act states there is no overtaking within 30 metres of a level railway crossing. Failing to stop for a school bus will cost you a total of $490 and six demerit points. Parents, you need to be aware if your child is driving your car and fails to stop for a school bus as the owner of the vehicle can be charged too! Halton Regional Police considers community safety to be one of our foremost priorities. We wholeheartedly invite the citizens to report unsafe, reckless or illegal driving behaviours through our Road Watch program. If the situation requires an immedi- ate police response then, of course, you call our communications depart- ment. In a situation where you feel the matter should be reported but it does not have immediacy to it, please take the time to visit your local police sta- tion and obtain a Community Road Watch report form. If people drive responsibly they will reduce the chances of conflict on the road and help make our roads safer. Aggressive driving may lead to inci- dents of road rage and abusive gestures or language is as much of a problem as the driving itself. Do not compete or retaliate, report it! The Road Watch program is intend- ed to promote voluntary compliance and the development of good, safe, dri- ving habits. Please endeavour to do your part to promote road safety with- in our community.
