Acton/Georgetown, Friday, September 5, 2008 9 Johnston completed the high school military co-op program with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry as a reservist, then joined the full-time army and is now stationed in Petawawa, a member of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. I will be serving as an OCs gunner (Officer Commanding). My job is to basically protect him, said Johnston. Other than that, Im really not sure what my other duties will be until I get there. Johnston said he has known he was going to Afghanistan since September of 2007, and prior to that time, he was in the 10 per cent pool, on a waiting list. About 2,500 soldiers left yesterday, and they will be assigned various duties, all based out of Kandahar. Canadian troops suffered another blow this week when three soldiers were killed in an ambush in Kandahar, bringing the number of Canadian casualties to 96. Johnstons tour of duty will last until April of 2009, but he will be back for an 18-day leave in November, just in time for Remembrance Day. Im kind of excited about going, but also a little nervous, said Johnston. Its the unknowns, those things that you cant trust. Ive talked to friends who have been over (to Afghanistan) and that helps, but the scariest part is simply not knowing who you can trust. Johnston said hes not too con- cerned about the stresses on his body, having taken numerous courses, including training in functioning under severe sleep deprivation, which is a real condition that he knows he will have to face while in Afghanistan. In addition, he feels pretty well pre- pared from a technical point of view, having trained in Technical Combat Casualty Care, remote weapon sys- tems and heavy machine gun train- ing all which will help as a member of the OMLT (Operational Mentor and Liaison Team) which aids in the train- ing of Afghan security forces, giving instruction in the use of weapons and tactics. As Johnston heads off to the other side of the world, his parents, Darlene and Keith, and younger brother Scott, are a combination of proud and con- cerned about the tour. I have a whole range of emotions, said Darlene. Im so very proud of Brad as he is able to live his dream and also serve his country, but I still worry. As a parent, we all want to see or sons and daughters successful, but my greatest fear is the lack of commu- nication, being so far away. Families of soldiers serving outside of Canada are well cared for, having numerous support systems in place, in the event of an incident. I feel much better knowing there are so many others in the system who will help us cope, but I know, every time I hear of an incident in Afghanistan, Ill be the first to wonder, Is that my son? and I know Ill worry until I find out its human nature. Johnston is one of a number of family members who have served their country in a foreign country. Johnstons had two great uncles who were in the services, one facing action in Cyprus, and also two of Johnstons great-great uncles fought overseas dur- ing the Second World War.
