The Raiders went 2-2 in the Woodchuck Classic over the weekend at the University of Vermont, which is a showcase event for NCAA scouts. They finished the exhibition schedule with a 4-4 record and still may make a couple of roster moves prior to Saturdays opener as players released from Ontario Hockey League training camps become available. I was pleased with the effort in Vermont and how we played within our systems. We just didnt finish well up front, said Georgetown head coach James Richmond. I think weve got a super back end and they generated a lot of interest from U.S. schools with the way they played there. While the Raiders do have some superb offensive prospects in rookies Andy Bathgate and Lukas Ciotti, nine of their top 10 scorers from 2006-07 have moved on, leaving 20-year-old sniper Matt Carter as one of only four returnees to Richmonds squad. And there is some question about whether Carter will be back in Georgetown as he has had an excellent camp with the OHLs Owen Sound Attack, netting two goals Sunday night in a 6-6 tie with the Niagara IceDogs. Still, Raiders new director of hockey operations Lonnie Freeman and head scout Bill MacIntyre have added some experience on the scor- ing front with the addition of Schombergs Andrew Ella, who is return- ing to Ontario for his final season of junior after two years in the BCHL with Alberni Valley, and right-winger Justin Lacey from the Waterloo Jr. B Siskins. Yes, we do have a lot of young forwards, but Id rather have them up front than on our blue line, Richmond added. There may not be the scoring flash that we had last year, although weve now got a few sandpaper-type character forwards who are going to drive other teams nuts and Id say our top-six defencemen match up with the best teams in our league. Kilbrides Evan Zych has assumed the captaincy duties and will be joined on the number-one unit by St. Catharines Jr. B pickup Scott Levitt, a 20-year-old. Oakvilles Spencer Metcalfe is back for a second year after he was released this week by the OHLs Barrie Colts, and rounding out the rearguards are Chris Borges from the Brampton Capitals, hard-hitting Jeremy Wick of Grand Valley and midget Jr. Canadiens captain Robert Brennan from Etobicoke. In goal, uncertainty remains with only 18-year-old Eddy Davey offi- cially signed so far, while Paul Claxton has just joined the club after being let go from Owen Sound. At the Woodchuck Classic, Georgetown defeated Woodstock, N.B. 2-1 and the New Hampshire Monarchs 4-3 in shootouts before losing to Portland, Maine 2-1 and 4-3 against the Syracuse Stars, who had for- mer Raider Marc Stuart in net. No individual scorers were available. For Saturdays opener, the 2007 North American-champion Georgetown Pipe Band will usher in the new season in a pre-game cere- mony at the Alcott Arena. There are a couple of notable changes within the OPJHL for the upcoming season, including an NHL-style shootout to resolve overtime ties. As well, only six teams from each division will qualify for the playoffs instead of eight as in past years. After some close games in the semifinals, the out- comes in each of the championship games for the four divisions of the Kinsmen Girls Softball Leagues Day of Champs were more convincing as the season wrapped up last Saturday during the Georgetown Fall Fair.
