RECOMMENDED BY INSURANCE COMPANIES WEEKEND SPECIAL 10 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Canadian Tires JumpStart Red Ball Event, which runs through Sunday, helps underprivileged local children get active in Halton Hills. Through the program, a $2 donation at the Georgetown Canadian Tire store helps kids who normal- ly couldnt afford to, get the chance to participate in organized sports and recreation. Each person who makes a donation receives a red JumpStart tennis ball. The program is national in scope, but local in its focus. Canadian Tire JumpStart is delivered to kids in Halton Hills through a local chapter made up of commu- nity leaders from the Georgetown Canadian Tire Store, Optimist Club, Links2Care, Georgetown Bread Basket food bank and The Town of Halton Hills, Launched in 2005 the Halton Hills Canadian Tire JumpStart chapter has already assisted more than 125 local children to get active in pro- grams such as hockey, soccer, baseball, dance, gymnastics and swimming. Participating in sports and recreational activities benefits kids in so many ways it improves their physical development, builds self-esteem and enhances their social skills, said Tracey Craig, Canadian Tire Associate dealer. Canadian Tire JumpStart was created to help overcome those barri- ers and give all kids the chance to play. The Canadian Tire Foundation for Families is a chari- table organization focused on building strong communi- ties by providing a helping hand to families and children in need, and through JumpStart, the focus is on getting kids into organized sports and recreation. This year, Canadian Tire expects to raise $3.9 million to help give up to 40,000 kids in need across Canada the chance to play. To date the program has helped 82,000 kids get active. The Halton Hills chapter of the program encourages community sport organizations, businesses and interested citizens to help build the fund so more children can expe- rience the benefits of participating in recreation and sport. Everyone is encouraged to help make a difference in a childs life by making a $2 donation at Canadian Tire or donating their Canadian Tire dollars at a JumpStart box near the checkout. If anyone has or knows a child who could benefit from the program they are asked to fill out an application through Links2Care at 47 Mill St. E., Acton, (attention Cathy Gerrow), online at www.haltonhills.ca., or at Canadian Tire, 315 Guelph St. (left at customer service desk, Attention Tracey Craig). To learn more about Canadian JumpStart, or make a donation call 905-877-5289 ext. 555 or visit canadi- antire.ca/jumpstart. In a bid to help earn the Guinness Book of World Records bragging rights for being part of the largest group to take a 1 km walk, Robert Little School stu- dents got onboard with countless other schools and companies across Canada to help achieve the record. Grade 4-5 core French teacher Ken Crozier (left) kept a watchful eye on the participants to make sure they stayed within the required path to validate the record.
