Acton/Georgetown, Friday, October 19, 2007 5 Youths playing with matches were the cause of a fire in a Barber Dr. garage Saturday evening. Firefighters were called to the home at about 8:40 p.m. and found the fire had already been extinguished by a neighbour. Damage is esti- mated at $5,000. Halton Hills firefighters were called to a Mill St. residence Thursday evening for a small fire in a bathroom. A purse left too close to a lit candle had caught fire. The purse and other nearby items were burned. There was no dollar loss reported. Firefighters were called to a Ransom St., Acton apartment Friday afternoon. When they arrived, the apartment was full of smoke. After a search of the apartment they found a pair of burned oven mitts on the kitchen counter. The tenant had removed some baking from the oven a few minutes earlier and touched the element in the oven with the mitts, then left the apartment briefly. The mitts smoldered before igniting, eventu- ally consuming themselves and other nearby items. A neighbour heard the smoke alarm and called 911. Dollar loss is estimated at $10,000. Halton Hills firefighters responded to a utili- ty van fire on the Nassagewaya-Esquesing Townline south of 22 Sideroad early Sunday morning. When they arrived the van was fully involved. The van was carrying large containers of oil used to service heavy equipment. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and called Town Public Works staff and Ministry of the Environment about clean-up. Fire calls Youths to blame for garage fire Leaking underground fuel storage tanks will be removed at the Robert C. Austin Operat ions Centre at a cost of about $314,000. The three tanks, which have been in the ground for more than 30 years, were used to hold clear diesel fuel, marked biodiesel fuel and gasoline. The fuel tanks serviced the public works, fire, ambulance and police vehicles over the years. In 2005, a leak was discovered, and the Town was ordered to remove the tanks with- in two years. Since then emergency services have not used the facility and the fire depart- ment and public works have been getting their gas from Chalmers Esso Fuel cardlock facility. Hazco Environment Services of Kitchener has been given the job, which is expected to be completed by the end of this month (October). Town to pay $314,000 to remove leaking tanks at Operations Centre
