Chelsea DeForest, 12, of Eighth Line, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after being ejected from the rear seat of a 1993 Honda Civic driven by a relative. Haliburton Highlands OPP say the acci- dent occurred about 4 p.m. Sunday on Hwy. 118, about 20 km east of Bracebridge, when the westbound Civic driven by David Mayes, 31, of Milton, crossed over into the eastbound lane then struck a rock face on the south side of the road. The car came back across the highway where it struck another rock face on the north side of the road. Chelsea s brother, Cody DeForest, 13, also of Georgetown, was injured in the accident. He was taken to Minden Hospital by ambu- lance where he was treated and released. On Monday, a police spokesperson said road conditions were dry at the time of the accident and it hadnt been determined if Chelsea was wearing a seatbelt. Mayes is facing charges of dangerous dri- ving causing death, and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He was released on bail in Lindsay court Tuesday. Mayes is to be back in court Nov. 7. Chelsea s father, John DeForest of Orangeville, said his daughter was returning home from her mother Yvonne McColls cot- tage when the accident happened.
