Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, November 7, 2007 7 Remembrance Day is fast approaching. Remember there is no free in freedom. We must remember all of the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Please remember to thank a veteran for their sacrifices in giving us our freedom. and say a special prayer for our troops who are engaged in Afghanistan that they all return home safely. Please try to attend a Remembrance Day service this weekend. On behalf of the Mayors Green Plan Task Force, I would l ike to extend kudos to Councillors Clark Somerville and Jon Hurst who spearheaded the successful Project Porchlight Campaign. A total of 6,800 light bulbs were distrib- uted throughout Halton Hills. Of note, we are only the 14th community in Canada, and the first community in the Greater Toronto Area, to participate in this energy saving pro- gram. More than 160 volunteers, represent- ing many local organizations, including your Town council, helped to deliver these light bulbs. Many thanks to all who participated. Heres a great way to assist those who are in need in our community give to the United Way of Halton Hills. Campaign Chair Chris Cooke, announced that this years campaign goal is $275,000. The United Way helps to fund 17 local social service agencies, which have programs that assist children, youth, seniors with disabili- ties, and individuals in crisis situations. If you work out of town and you have payroll deductions, please make sure they are directed to the United Way of Halton Hills by simply filling out a form. Congratulations to Mark Rowe, a Grade 7 and 8 teacher at St . Brigid Catholic Elementary School in Georgetown. Mark has been selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award by Ontario Heritage, through its Heritage Community Recognition Program, for his significant con- tributions to heritage preservation in Halton. On behalf of Council, I am pleased to wel- come a new business in Georgetown Party Balloons and Gifts The Mayors Showcase is presently dis- playing an amazing quilt in the council chamber, on loan from The Hobby Horse/Quilt Source Canada. A local Georgetown resident, Chelsey Oliver, has made the quilt that measures 20 feet in width by eight feet in height, and depicts a scene of Muskoka. Keeping it real!
