WEDNESDAY... While many people talk of Remembrance at this time of the year, students at Georgetown District Christian School (GDCS) do a little more than talk. They write letters. As part of their Creative Writing Program, Grade 4 students have been writing to troops in Afghanistan, more specifically, Capt. Tom Ruggle of Georgetown. We wanted to remember the troops in our own way, said GDCS Development Director Tizny Braam, The fact Capt. Ruggle was a gradu- ate of this school gives the students an unique opportunity to write let- ters to someone who not only knows the school, but actually attended here. Braam said the school wanted to make sure the students realize how important it is to remember Canadian soldiers who are serving in places like Afghanistan. We want to impress upon the students the importance of honour- ing, respecting and blessing our troops, while thanking God for them, and their contribution to making our world safer, said Braam, We need to be reminded of the importance of remembering them, and were trying our best to do our part to make the students more aware, by having them write to Capt. Ruggle. In addition to writing the letters, the students are also encouraged to wear red every Friday, as a gesture of remembering all troops who are, like Ruggle, serving in some foreign country, away from family and friends, often in harms way.
