John Longstreet, 74, of Mississauga, drum major of the Toronto Signals Band, was leading the band when he went down face forward, said Georgetown resident Tom Johnson, also a member of the band. Johnson said CPR done by a spectator at the parade, and later by paramedics, could not revive Longstreet, who had been a member of the band for 39 years. Despite the tragedy, Johnson said band members rallied and decided to continue on with the parade after Longstreet was taken to hospital. (We said) Lets do it. This is what John would have wanted, said Johnson. Parade organizer Al Watt said he was impressed with the band for finishing the parade. The parade was delayed for about 15 min- utes. Watt said turnout for this years parade exceeded last years event. Winning entries in the parade were Georgetown District Christian School Best Theme Entry, Toronto Signals Band Best Band Entry, St. Johns Ambulance/Therapy Dogs Best Community Group Entry, Halton Gas Service Best Commercial Entry and Baker/Harrison Family of Georgetown Most Creative Entry. Honorable Mentions went to Mandi Lee, Cancer Assistance Services-Halton Hills (CAS- HH) and Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.
