Alice Anne LeMay Chair of the Board Michael W. Pautler Director of Education Gillian Tuck Kutarna Chair of the Board Wayne Joudrie Director of Education 10 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, October 3, 2008 For the fire service, October is the month that has been designated as the month to host Fire Prevention Week. A week of concentrated efforts delivering fire and life safety messaging. Why is that? Well, it came about as a result of a devastating fire that took place in Chicago in 1871. A rapid, out of control barn fire which, fueled by a strong, restless wind, spread at lightning speed through the predominantly wooden structures of greater Chicago. By the following day October 9 when the fire was finally brought under control by the use of explosives, much of the Windy City had been devastated. At least 300 people had perished and some 18,000 buildings were destroyed. Almost one third of Chicagos population of 300,000 was left homeless. Thereafter, each October 9, the people of Chicago commemorate the fire with parades and ceremonies. In 1911, the Fire Marshals Association of North America officially declared that date as Fire Prevention Day. Ontario became the first jurisdic- tion to observe Fire Prevention Week during the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. Fire Chief Brent Marshall says, This practice continues to this day in communities throughout North America as a constant reminder that pre- vention is the ultimate cure. Marshall adds, As much as we would like the general population to be vigilant of everyday practices, the statistics unfortunately reflect otherwise. While the norm might be one week of fire pre- vention efforts, Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention staff tend to make the entire month of October fire prevention activity-related. Chief Marshall indicated that Fire Prevention staff extend themselves into the community where possible in an effort to deliver life safety messages, activities and programs. Over the past couple of years, schools have reaped the benefits of visiting and participating in the departments new fire safety trailer. With the theme of Help Prevent Home Fires, staff will be providing the many ways of preventing a fire, as well as what actions to take in the event a fire does start. Should your group wish to have fire depart- ment staff visit, please contact David Ford, Captain Public Education at 905-873-2601 ext. 2115.
