Do you remember SYKES BAKERY 14 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, October 8, 2008 HILLSVIEW NEWS FROM THE SENIORS CENTRES Fall has certainly arrived cooler weath- er, shorter days, shorts away, digging out those warm sweaters. It is perhaps the most beautiful of the four seasons but a precursor of the cold and snowy weather to come. Apparently about another week before we see the vivid reds and oranges in the leaves on our trees. The Centre was filled to capacity for the Fall Fashion Show presented by Alia/Tan Jay of Milton. You all made it a huge success. Hope you pick up some of the fashions you saw. I rushed over to Milton the next morn- ing, in the pouring rain, to pick up the red coat we all loved. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make it a great event. I have heard only positive comments about our first venture at Centre Day Trips. We took two buses full to see the Chinese Lantern Festival. It was amazing! This was followed by a trip to St. Jacobs where there was an opportunity to visit the market and then the craft stores in the downtown area. The last stop was at Picards to pick up something made with and from peanuts. If you have an idea for a day trip please write it on a paper, sign and include your phone number. It can be dropped in the Suggestion Box at the Reception Desk. At present these trips are offered to anyone 55+. Technical difficulties with the showing of the first movie on Toonie Movie Afternoon have now been ironed out and they are ready to go with the movie for Friday, October 31. This is one you really want to see, The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Even if you have already seen it, it is worth a second viewing. The first of the Bon Appetite Luncheons to be presented by Links2Care will be held Wednesday, October 15 at noon. There is limited seating and you will need to pur- chase your ticket in advance at the Reception Desk. The next luncheon in this series will be held November 19. I realize that seems like a long way ahead but mark your calendar now and you can keep that date open. As seniors we get so busy and these things sneak up on us. The Art Club is quite pleased with the response to their Art Workshop to be held Saturday, October 18 featuring Doug Purdon. If you have not yet registered please contact the Centre, 905-877-6444 for avail- ability. There are two more Laptop Computer classes coming up. One is Introduction to e- mail and will be held Friday mornings from November 7 to December 12. The time is 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost is $72.23 for six weeks. The second class is an Introduction to the World Wide Web. It will be held Thursday mornings from November 6 to December 11. Time and cost is the same as above. These class- es are very popular and fill up quickly. Please phone the Centre to check the availability of space. We are sorry to say goodbye to Martha Stone who is leaving us to return to Cape Breton Island. Martha has held many volun- teer positions at our Centre. We hope that she leaves with many, many pleasant memo- ries of us all. Please keep in contact and let us know what you are up to. I am sure you will be volunteering at something. All the best in the future! The Centre will be closed Monday, October 13 for Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving Day to all. Forget the diet! Enjoy your family, friends, and good food. It was an exciting day at the Seniors Centre last Tuesday when 19 members and their guests celebrated their birthdays which occurred in August and September and the Looking to the Future committee received their first cheque for $500 from the Seniors Preferred Realtor Program. Thanks to Dave and Sam Burlands initiative anyone either sell- ing or purchasing a property who mentions the Seniors Preferred Realtor program at the time of either purchasing or selling property will see the Looking to the Future program richer by $500 on completion of the sale. Dave Burland presented the cheque to Donna Rowley, chairperson of the LTTF committee. Also present were committee members Julie Conroy, Bev Jones and Joanne Bissonnette. Bev Jones, our fundraising chair asked me to mention they are looking for non-perish- able items for the huge Basket of the Season. Marion Storey and her committee always look after this project and fill the basket to overflowing with tasty treats and useful items that can be used over the Christmas season. The penny sale items are out on display and tickets are available so you can multiply your chances by purchasing a strip each time you are in. The Penny Table winning tickets will be drawn at the Bazaar plus there will be two draws for either a beautiful Christmas ceram- ic doll or a lovely afghan. The afghan won first prize at the Acton Fall Fair. The Basket for the Season winning ticket will be drawn at our Christmas Dinner on Friday, Dec. 5. We are also looking for gently used arti- cles for Grannys Attic as well as items for the Country Store (which could include indoor plants, gently-used Christmas decorations, jewelry, paperback books, puzzles etc.). June Fraser will be asking for help with the Bazaar Tea. She will need items for mak- ing sandwiches, fancy cookies, squares and tarts and of course, help! Watch for her list at the front desk. The Bazaar is always a great hit and lots of fun with handcrafted gifts and a bake table. Dont forget to take a moment to rest and enjoy the tea. It sounds like a long way off, but the way time seems to fly it will be here before we know it. Evening Euchre will be on Wednesday, Oct. 15 and everyone who enjoys playing euchre is encouraged to come. If you have some photos stored away and need encouragement to organize them, the scrapbooking classes on the last Monday of the month at 7 p.m. is a great way of doing so. It would make a great gift for someone in your family and something they would treasure. Another craft that is very popular is the paper tole class on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Some of our members have created beautiful pictures. The October social dinner will be on Monday, Oct. 29 with a Halloween Theme, so dig out those scary costumes. In keeping with the German them on the menu is Bratwurst sausage, sauerkraut, German potato salad fol- lowed by pumpkin pie or fresh fruit. Not only will you be entertained by all the costumes, but James Cormier will be here. He is an all- round entertainer who sings, dances and even tells jokes. It looks like a great evening. Anyone who signed up for the trip to the St. Lawrence Market should please pay the $20 as soon as possible. There is still room for a few more people and I know everyone who went before enjoyed themselves whether shopping in the two markets, or exploring the city. Marg Bromby won the 50/50 this week. She won $150. Congratulations Marg. FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Georgetown Seniors Centre Acton Seniors Centre
