RUDIGER, Rita On October 7th, 2008, after a lengthy farewell, in her 91st year, Rita has finished her journey through this life. She was predeceased by her husband Roy (2005) and her parents, Annie and Graham Crowell, who were still in her thoughts and words in her last years. She leaves her daughters, Linda (Ken) Pilgrim and Nancy (Paul) Yates, grandchildren Jason, Shannon (Ricky), Michelle, Christina and An- drew, and great-grandchildren Lauren and Jai. Alzheimer's took her memory, but never her courage and humour. She grew up in Truro, N.S. and came to Ontario in her 20's where she met Roy on a blind date. They were married and resided in Georgetown for over 50 years. She was happiest when out socializing, bowl- ing, playing cards or darts with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary of which she was a life mem- ber. She loved being with her family and she had a fondness for her sons-in-law. Friends were received at the J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, north of Maple Avenue, Georgetown 905-877-3631 on Thurs- day from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral and committal service will be held in the chapel on Friday October 10th, 2008 at 11:00 am. Crema- tion to follow. In memory contributions to the Alzheimer's Foundation would be appreciated. Look inside todays paper for the I Shop Local special section. When asked to name our favorite restaurant, cafe, or shop, we almost always cite a unique local business (look at the results in our Readers Choice as proof). We embrace the idea of distinctive busi- nesses with local character, but often forget their survival depends on our patronage. It is easy for us to get so consumed by efficiency that we forget how much of our lives we spend eating out, shopping, and doing other business. We owe it to ourselves to consider the quality of our experience, and ask if we benefit when we choose a community-based business. Local owners with much of their life savings invested in their businesses have a natural interest in the long-term health of the community. Community-based businesses are essential to charitable endeavors, frequently serving on local boards, and supporting a variety of causes. Yes, there are some corporate chains that give back to towns in which they do business, but anyone who raises funds for local non-profits will tell you that independents are their base of support. So... support your neighbors... support our community, shop smart... shop our local stores!
