Acton/Georgetown, Friday, October 17, 2008 5 A Halton man is facing numerous charges after a domestic disturbance at Erin Fall Fair Monday afternoon. Police report at about 2:15 p.m. a 26-year-old woman was assaulted and threatened by her estranged husband at the fair. A bystander, a 48-year-old woman, who stepped in to intervene was assaulted as well. The suspect fled the scene. No medical attention was required. Officers went to the mans home in Halton and saw him pulling up to the residence. The man tried to flee once he saw police and ducked into another driveway in an attempt to hide. Police approached the man and observed he had been drinking. Charged with two counts of assault , uttering threats , impaired driving and driving with more than 80 mgs of alco- hol in 100 ml of blood is a 52- year-old man. The man was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Guelph court Tuesday. Police report someone siphoned approximately $25 worth of gas from a vehicle parked at a Beaver Crt. resi- dence sometime between Saturday and Monday. CDs were stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked at a McKenzie Dr. residence overnight Sunday and Monday. Police were cal led to an Acton home Wednesday after- noon for a domestic incident involving a husband and wife. Charged with assault, assault with a weapon, choking and uttering threats is a 38-year-old Acton man. The woman received minor injuries. He also said, The growth plan has not created this growth pres- sure it provides a framework to manage and plan for it. The statements fly in the face of the fairness campaign, which indi- cates that a lag in provincial fund- ing is causing local infrastructure problems and the Places to Grow plan is only going to put more pressure on the system. Carr said while he wasnt on council prior to 2006, he was upset Smitherman blamed past council decisions for the infra- structure woes in Halton and countered that the ministers accu- sation isnt true. I think a lot of whats tran- spired is due to a lack of funding from the provincial government, he said. So many of the services we need are what the province has- nt provided for us, like hospitals. He said another part of the problem is that the province has downloaded costly services to the Region that end up on the proper- ty tax base. My big concern in all of this is the property taxpayers cant contin- ue to pay for downloaded services, he said. Theyre being squeezed by increases in property taxes. The chairman said he thinks the letter from Smitherman will make council want to take an even harder look at future growth. We have to be very sure that we have the infrastructure in place before we authorize new growth, he said. Carr recently tabled a motion that, if passed by council, could ultimately stop future develop- ment until the Province improves hospital capacity in Halton. The motion is to be debated by the regions health and social services committee next Tuesday. Carr said now is the time for residents to let him know what they think about the hospital issue. He encouraged people to e-mail their comments to gary.carr@hal- ton.ca. Police blotter Man charged after assault at fair Smitherman, Carr spar over fairness campaign Continued from pg. 1
