Urban Georgetown residents will be receiving a paper bag in the Friday, Oct. 29 edition of The Independent & Free Press and are asked to fill them with food dona- tions for the drive and leave them out on their front step for pickup by 8:30 a.m. All the food collected will go to the Georgetown Bread Basket, which each month provides about 13,000 lbs. of food to approximate- ly 37 adults and 145 children in the Georgetown area. These figures are changing, as job losses continue to go up, said Marian Viant of Georgetown Bread Basket. We hope to exceed last years collection of over 42,000 lbs. Darlene Moss, scout/guide food drive co-ordinator, said, while they are hoping for a big collection of food, she fears they may not collect as much as they did last year because the drive is the day after Halloween. She said as a result, people may hesitate to leave their food outside the night before, and may not get it out early enough the next morning for pickup by the youths. She added a late Hallo- ween night for some of the youths may also mean fewer of them would show up early the next morning for the food drive. She urges everyone to have their food outside early, and if it is not outside, the youths will likely be knocking on area doors. Cash donations will also be accepted during the food drive and anyone giving the youth a dona- tion of $10 or more will be issued a tax receipt. Viant said the foods most need- ed are canned meat and stew, canned fish, jam, and cheese spreads, canned juice and juice boxes, powdered milk, canned milk canned fruits and vegetables, nutritious snacks for children, mini fruit cups, peanut butter, instant coffee and personal care items such as shampoo, toothpaste and brushes, deodorant, shaving cream and razors. She asks that those who donate food check the expiry dates to save volunteers time at a later date. Volunteers are needed at The Alliance Church, 290 Main St. S, after 9 a.m. to help sort and box. Viant said it is a great opportunity for youths to get in some of their community hours. Just show up and sign in, said Viant. Volunteers who can lift boxes that weigh up to 50 lbs. are also needed at the church and also later at the Bread Basket.
