Change your clocks...change your batteries, is the fire departments slogan. Halton Hills Fire Department Captain David Ford says while youre changing the batteries its also the time to test the alarm to ensure it will sound in the event of an emergency. One easy way to test the alarm is to light an incense stick and hold it up so the smoke goes into the alarm and activates it, said Ford. Once it activates, fan the smoke away from the device and consider giving it a quick vacu- uming afterwards, he said. Dust, spider webs and insects which have accumulated in the alarm can affect the performance of the smoke alarm, said Ford. Working smoke alarms save lives and reduce injuries by pro- viding early warning to residents so they can evacuate safely from their home, said Ford. The Ontario Fire Code requires a working smoke alarm on every floor of a home, and near any sleeping area. Even with the minimal cost of a smoke alarm, there are sti l l homes not equipped with at least one working smoke alarm. If your home is not properly protected with smoke alarms, its time to act. Its the law, stressed Ford. As important as it is to have working smoke alarms, it is every bit as important to know what the family members are supposed to do in the event of waking to the sound of an alarm. Developing and practising a home escape plan will ensure a quick, safe evacuation of all family members, he said. Adults and children alike need to plan and rehearse their home escape plan. Anyone who would like assis- tance with the placement of smoke alarms or developing a fire safety plan is asked to call fire service staff at Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services at 905-873-2601 ext. 2115 (Capt. David Ford) or ext. 2101 (Capt. Armando Cabral). Change clocks...and batteries fire department recommends
