have quite settled in and are carrying on in the old tradition of service to the community John has changed things around a bit in the store and added some new items to the stock And the result of the clearing out between our lots is that I can now look right up to the crest of the hill and see a stately row of those tall spruce on the skyline Betty Marshalls cat likes to sun herself on those old foundation walls I can sec her now sitting on the lower one with her head forward and ears pricked gating down at the base Although she always seems fascinated by whatever she sees moving there she never bothers to pounce No more does she bother with me Shes curious about the house got as far as the porch one day but Ann came out and she bolted but she will never speak Although she owns me there has only been one occasion when she has not ignored me completely One day just as I had arrived home a rather skinny black cat started up the steps from the road The Marsha Us cat sprang into action and at a distance of about six feet outstared the intruder Afterwards she actually came and rolled rather proudly at my feet but would accept no congratulatory pat All of which reminds me that I never told you about the kitten I found myself unable to refuse two short weeks after I moved in here My friends said Theyre no trouble at ail Val and rush to meet you when you get home I picked it up on the August holiday so that we would how a chance to get to know each other And it really was a dear Little thing grey I called it for Guys Cliffe Warwick Well got on me and on Tuesday when I got home it sure rushed to meet me or so I fondly thought Actually it shot out of the house as soon as Id opened the door a crack and was gone for several hours The next night we had a battle of wills because of the fringe on the throw I put over the couch in summer Certainly we finished the evening on the same couch but at opposite ends me trying to read despite the hate being beamed at me from the rigid little cat at the other end Bygones were bygones between us the next day but trouble lay ahead By midnight I was rising every hour on the hour to take the poor sick little thing to the Kitty Utter I took it to the Small Animal Clinic at the next day and they diagnosed distemper with a slim chance of recovery Despite the long distance charges I phoned frequently over the weekend and by Monday to our delight a recovery was in sight pet to someone else not because of our ups and downs but really because I worried so much about leaving it alone in the house all day when it was of a tender age
