Indiana starting point by taking his In tandem HeleftFriday Wellington M John Root has suggested to the newly formed Department of Transport and Communications they should consider the extension of Highway from north to pick up at Grand Volley go on to and eventually over and Mr Root said since the Department was Improving the Acton the route would be an alternate way into the Bay area and would relieve some of the in the Toronto area Motorists could go up and see a beautiful part of Ontario he said follow the Grond River Valley and Ret up Into the wildlife sanctuary Following is the official report in part of the proceedings of the standing committee on supply Hansard says Mr J Root Mr Chairman I have been listening to them build highways all around me and running into problems so maybe 1 can give you some easy ones to solve At I have had representation that there could be a third lane Just at the eastern port of on 89 They established a liquor store on the north side of the highway and the traffic coming into the incidentally that has been a dry area a long time and probably they are trying to moke up for lost time there is a lot of traffic and coming in from the east they turn in But If they are coming from the west from the Mount area heading north on Highway and someone wants to make a left turn Into the liquor store and the traffic is heavy they block everything It has been suggested to me that if we put in a third lane a passing lane and let the traffic flow we would solve the traffic congestion and eliminate a point of irritation with the people Hon Mr Do you mean a turning lane Mr Root No a passing lane Hon Mr MacNaughton A passing lane Mr Hoot Coming out of the village of the people who want to turn Into the liquor store have to wait for traffic coming the other way and they block the traffic It is only a twolane highway coming out of Shelburne traffic piles up I have had a number of representations from the reeve and other responsible people for a third lane it would not cost a lot of money and the traffic could flow around Hon Mr MacNaughton That makes some sense Mr Root Then I want to thank the department after a lot of representations for putting a flashing signal on Highway at the intersection of Trafalgar Rood and the extension of Wellington county road We hod a series of accidents some fatal every few weeks After a lot of pressure you put a flashing signal up and I want to tell you since tiiot light went up there has never been an accident Now a man who lives on the corner soys Could they not make the light little dimmer It flashes in my house Hon Mr It goes to prove you cannot please every bo Mr Root But it probably saved lot of lives also put lights over your signs at the Intersection of the Fergus road county road 3 and Highway and that has stopped the complaints we had there that they could not find the Intersection at night I have had pressure for another flushing signal north of Rock wood on Highway that is the point where the county In Its wisdom to end the development road move It over several concessions This Is causing me lot of grief They soy that there should be a flushing signal there Is a lot of traffic down the hill on me township rond How many vehicles per day do you have to have on a road before you will put up a signal There have been some bad accidents there in fact two of my neighbours were killed on that corner Hon Mr You know Mr Root they have what they call a system of warrants that hos to do with that sort of I cannot figure it out myself but maybe somebody else can It Is probably quite academic to those who understand It Mr McNab It certainly would not be on the basis of how many cars alone you have to have it depends on the type of Intersection the type of turning movement how close the intersection is to buildings and so on Sheer volume of traffic alone is not the determining thing it is a combination Could you add anything to that Mr Bldell Mr No that is about it Mr Root I thought you probably had to kill a certain number of people and then Hon Mr You get more warrants for that Mr Root You get more warrants Hon Mr Oh Mr Root Well that is what J said to the former minister Tell me how manv vou have to kill Hon Mr MacNaughton Something along those fines Mr Root and wo will solve the problem Mr McNab In connection with thisand I know this is recognized I do not think there is on Intersection of any significance all where we have not had at least one request for a Dashing a stop sign or something of that nature Hon Mr MacNaughton Or signal lights Mr Or signal lights And frequently particularly with signal lights under certain conditions they can cause more dnmnge than good also If they Indiscriminately placed peo ple lust Ignore them In event Talking flashing lights and Ihese they hove to be meaningful Hon Mr MacNaughton You find they colour blind sometimes Mr Root breeds contempt But this was a fairly level Intersection 1 do not know why the people just drive through It probably It is because It Is level both ways but we have had quite a number of accidents there and 1 have had pressure- Mr They would not be drinking up in that area it Is other areas- Mr Root They come out of well I will not say where Harry Is not here Mr Stokes He mentioned a liquor store there Interjections by members Mr Root I believe in the local option prlneiple when the people it tide the want it let them have it If they break their necks they asked for it Mr Newman Windsor Did I not your tar parked out there the other day Mr Root Then I want to commend your department sir on lettuiL a contract to construct that road from Acton to There are five lots in there that were a nightmare and every Sunday afternoon they have a up at Ospringe which really shakes me up and my respect for the Sabbath there is a lot of traffic and this is going to solve the problem Ihcn we get the traffic up there of course There has been pressure to have Highway extended north to pick up at Grand Valley go on to and eventually cross over 10 and 24 and an alternate route into the Georgian Bay area so that you could relieve some of the congestion in the Toronto area Motorists could go up and see a beautiful part of Ontario follow the Grand River valley and get Presentations to 4H members By Mrs A Benton The I met In Memorial Hall on Thursday evening The Official Plan for The Township of Draft copies of the official plan may be inspected at the Township Office within the hours of to 5 Monday to Friday prior to the meeting Written submission regarding the content of the official plan will be received by the undersigned up to p August FRENCH Secretary Treasurer Esquesing Planning Board Township of Esquesing up into that wildlife sanctuary 1 hope you keeping that In mind Hon Mr MacNaughton The member will admit that we are pointed in the right direction Mr Itoot Hie minister is pointed In the right direction Actually a lot of that rood Is paved now Another miles will take It from Highway to I think there about 18 lots depending on how you go from and It will all be paved You are paying per cent of the cost of maintenance now so It will be matter of paying the other per tent There is a from Primrose to Mount I JO miles without a single north south highway everything Is on the roads I think we have few good claims for consideration In that area Another thing that I was wondering n extending the Road I realize that this Is a municipal road It has been built as a development road right across township to the boundary has built it to the road which is county road In Another A miles and it would be completed right through to the Highway This road carries a very heavy load of traffic and it picking up all the lime with people heading north do not know whether you have any Influence on where they designate development roads or how do you go about Mr The minister has it all Mr Root completing that gap that would be paved all the way from Ookvllle right through to Highway It is carrying a lot You get to the Fergus- road and then you have four and one half miles of dust Hon Mr I see Mr making extensive notes over there Presumably that is what it is about Mr Root To meet the volume of traffic going through there it makes a lot of sense to speed It up When you come to a dead end you either over to Orangeville or take the gravel road Hon Mr MacNaughton Is that in Mr Root It is in a great county Hon Mr MacNaughton Maybe Duffcnn has got enough eligibility to do that itself However we will have a look Mr Root This is what I wondered I know I think they felt that when East yit the FergusOrantevilte road built as a development road it had its share but really when you come within miles of connecting link there should be Rome way It can be worked out so that It la through there It could be of extending Highway although do not tell anybody in my area that I ever said that An member Tie member lust put It on the record did he know Mr Hansard cancel that Mr li in there now Mr Root Okay Well It hi a I have been looking for of getting from through and that Is another way Oh I tun think of other places you were running Into problems Mr The member will get his una re Hon Mr MacNaughton Not too bud Mr Root They want you to slow down to the south and I hear Ihcm talking about all thcte roads up north and I am all for developing the north but Hon Mr The member would say that that would do for openers Mr Root I beg your pardon Hon Mr MacNaughton You would say what you propose to do would do for openers Mr Root I hope that I have planted a few seeds that will grow and bear fruit in the days that lie ahead An hon You give mo the roies and give the water Jug Hon Mr MacNaughton and Ihe fertilizer Mr Root When I drive through northern Ontario and I drive a lot up there and I am for opening up the north and see their miles of hen high lid not even exist when I first elected all the way from the right through to Nipigon on 17 Mr Stokes We did not even have the IronsCanada Highway then Mr Root No I agree that has all been built Then you start at William and you go through to and the minute that Premier cut the ribbon at Atlkokan the cry was On to Port Frances On to Fort Prances and on to Red Lake Why the little bit that I have asked for I am almost embarrassed to ask for so little Mr Newman The minister blushing Mr Root Such a little bit Mr Stokes He spent more on a than you and I asked for in 10 years Mr Chairman With that happy note we will adjourn until clock
