Absurd to pay for police twice Foaming torrent thunders out of Fairy Lake Bill SMILEY Several Items this week none of them large enough to a column about but of them of such v ital importance to Ihe beautiful tulips at the Soldiers Monument plot The little girl deliberately broke off and earned a full dozen of the flowers At such a place especially such vandalism is regarded almost as a sacrilege and public sentiment naturally demands severe punishment for the offense Mr Barbour of Hillsburg who has been buying wool at Acton of the Canadian National Railway for several years will open his market there for the season on June and the two following Thursdays For the first lime In a number of years county jail at Milton was without a prisoner This state of affairs is a good evidence that was THE ACTON FREE PRESS PHONE Businessand Editorial Office Residents of Acton and Esques ing indeed need to be concerned if Mayor Tom Hili Is unsuccessful In his bid to have regional police costs stricken from the two areas As he sees it Acton and Esquesing residents might have to pay double for police because there is no provision in Bill legislation which set up regional government to deal with a situation where two police forces were involved Acton has Its own detachment while the Esquesing area of Halton Hills is also patrolled by members of the O P from the Milton detachment Nassagaweya is in the same boat as Acton and Esquesing so Mayor Hill has asked Mayor Anne MatArthur to accompany him on a jaunt to Queen Park where they tope to collar the Hon John White and wring some sort of a con cession In his remarks to the police commission the mayor also revealed that If Acton and residents are saddled with the extra police costs paying for protection twice the mill rate could escalate to the point where it would be too rich for anyone blood Of course the whole point of regional government was to avoid duplication of services but at present it could lead to two police forces and double taxation which is both absurd and unreasonable No one in Acton benefits from the presence of regional police in Georgetown although the day may come when the region s law en officers are In Acton Polite Chief Ken has asked for copies of all local by laws In Acton and as well as the other municipalities so when the day arrives the regional police will be prepared to enforce them is now In the peculiar position of having the OPP providing law enforcement but not enforcing local by laws Halton Regional Police are beginning to assist the O P In but Chief noted there could be legal entanglements the region force would want to avoid As of now they are standing by at cidents until the P arrive In any event it is a matter which requires the at tention Mayor Hill wants to give one with which residents of all three of Hills should be concerned present at the reunion in IBM Mrs Mat thews and their children 11 Charlie Sand Mildred survive him Peacefully indeed did Mrs Eliza fall million dollars Thai what Ihe cost of the upcoming federal dec uon is likely to be How for a solution to inflation housing crisis pensioners problems unemployment and the glaring inadequacies in Ihe tax system to quote David Lewis The average Canadian will undoubtedly greet the news of the July election with a bohum attitude If anything he will be antagonistic Only Ihe most idealistic will really accept the that a change of government will make a dramatic dlf to the problems facing this nation Not lhit the Liberals under Pierre Elllolt have been faultless or have sue dealt wilh high costs and dwindling profits But could Ihe Conservatives or the New have done belter David Lewis who probably doesn t believe himself he will ever get a mandate to form a government says he and his party could have done more than the Liberals rhats why the NDP voted against the government and caused its collapse Yet the have hid more power In recent months than they are likely to have again for sometime and their influence was not all that inspiring or earth shaking And Robert Stanfield who has publicly pouted since the last election says he can cure the ills of Canado with a 90day prices and Incomes freeze to be followed up by more flexible with allowances for raising the incomes of the low wage earners What failed to mention it how he plans to explain away the inequities that always result from government lrols of any kind how he hopes to make controls work here when they hove failed so miserably Britain and the United Slates and how he will pay the cost of ad ministering these controls even if he can make them work and still the Canadian people from higher costs Running off the mouth such as has done for over IB man hi Is easy difficult is delivering under the pressure of office In ihe opinion of miny would be no alternative to Trudeau A Gallup Poll Liken in the first week of March showed Hut twice as many Canadians feel that Pierre lliott would make the belt Prime of Conada when the other choice is was selected by percent with only percent opting for Twenty seven million dollars for an exercise in futility Twenty seven million dollars to feed Ihe ego of the NDP and end the whining of the Progressive Con servatives Twenty seven million dollars to remind the Canadian people that the an swers to unemployment inflation Ihe housing crisis pensioners problems and unemployment lie within the citizens of this country and their ability to work out their own solutions fOK Tribune A general election has no- been called an election which was predictable It will be the policy of The Tribune to support ihe election of a Progressive Con servative government under the p of Robert I The overriding issue in tha election ihe opinion of this is the proven inability of the government lo govern There is a ram pa til increase in inflation strikes and labour unrest The federal goverrjrert has been unable to control the abuses the unemployment insurance system a tremendous unrest in the on the federal penitentiaries and seething discontent in the federal Inflation is the central fear in Canadian life affecting the electorate and the government has sat by helplessly in fact Prime Minister Trudeau and Finance Minister Turner have said publicly that they cannot do anything about it The Liberal government has been in office for eleven years and in that time the cos of living has gone out of control and there has been a crushing burden of cor porate and personal taxation laid upon the people of Canada The Liberal government has failed to make hard and unpopular decisions lodeal with these matters and it would seem that their overriding motive has been lo cling on to power and office The time has come for a clean sweep and Robert Ihe only alternative deserves a chance
