these past three weeks that there s no need to say Guess what Im back Am I glad to be home again Yes Indeed Three weeks of driving around alone muttering to myself was just about my limit Im Retting plenty of chance for long talks now though with all Ihe questions people are asking about Scotland Those asked most often arc Was Scotland all I ex peeled Well I went with no preconceived notions and therefore not only suffered no great disappointments but had a great many enjoyable surprises instead The stonework throughout the whole country in walls house barns and castles especially ruins where you can the whole method of structure is unbelievable and quite fascinating Heart twists The farm country is so beautiful especially after leaving a very rocky ureal gives your heart a twisl to drive through it Where did I go All over the place 1 missed the north coast the south and most of the large cities I did manage to get into someplace the sire of Inverness or I was so busy concen trntltig on driving that I couldnt gawk too much so Just skipped the cities How was the driving Well t didnt run into anybody and managed to stay on the left hand side of the road most of the time pulling out onto the wrong side only when very pre occupied Inside the car though things a different from what I m used to caused some confusion With the Ml hand gear shift the low gear was here Im used to having reverse and since the Ford a directional signals were to the of the steering wheel where our gear shift on both our car and truck I found myself signaling turns when I really wanted to shift And of course once I got back home to my Rambler I kept putting it in reverse in stead of signaling a left turn Takes day After renting the car It took me three days to find out how to get the emergency brake off after being unable to leave the ferry at and about ten days to find the horn On the whole driving was rather wearing With narrow roads and no shoulders there no room for error However I covered 1100 miles with no What were the prion Pretty much the same as here buying food and ciotbm Gas came to about a gal lon but the small car used very One week Ill sit down with my scribbled ac counts and figure out exactly how much I spent on what Friendly What were the people like Very friendly once they real tied I was Canadian and not American always made sure to into the first few sentences of conversation a comment such as The wea ther is so beautiful here When 1 left Canada it was degrees or Your bakery shops have such a variety of things far more than in Can ada And inevitably almost all the people I spoke to wanted to know three things the price of food In Canada the price of gas and how much unemployment there is and what the government is doing about it The final Question friends asked when I got back was usually And how did you find things at home I found things Just the same as ways hectic Sue had three premature puppies the car broke down two of the young were booked into the hospital for minor opera lions Just the usual run- of Ihe- mill things Next turn Three days after I got home it was s turn to take off carrying most of the family with him and leaving me in a splendid state of dis organization and with pro blems of course It was a eek before the car was fixed for in the rainstorm I found that some body had backed over the downspout and flattened it Cords tool box In the truck I guess holds Ihe needlenosed pliers neces sary lor pulling out porcupine quills On the other hand Im hav ing old school friends that I havent seen in years or old trail riding friends etc come to stay and talk up a storm Theres a couple of cousins bringing families out to stay a week or so before too long And In between all these visits theres days of not hav ing to get up until I want and being able to sit up till three in the rooming If I feel like it And I can now get out that cm f Spanish in not sauce and sherry wine vine gar that makes sick and eat them alt myself Maybe even the octopus too It is surely a different kind of summer all right her father the bride chose a gown silk georgette styled with a full circle skirt falling into a full
