OUR READERSJWRJTE J Why not govern ourselves 124 Tidcy Ave Hills Acton Ont ive The Editor The Acton Free Ac Ion Sir I am writing this letter lo indicate my personal support of your paper stand on the mailer of contemplated municipal complex which been under consider by Hills Council believe that this expresses loo he altitude of Ihc vast majority of people in Hills It seems to me the nude in Aclon was of a very limited nature Certainly people in our were not approached Some few yem ago the writer of this leller expressed opinion federal and provincial of Canada were sleadily moving in the of dictatorship Now our municipal are following the same course of action lias been defined in the past as government of the people by the people for the people There was a time when local politicians were looked upon with some degree of respccl because they were felt to be holding office because of the service they could render One finds It difficult some times to hold that view anymore In any case why is it that our Hills councillors consistently go for higher expenditures all the way from salaries lo proposed municipal complex Several limes their ganging up with Burlington representatives has overruled the saner attitude of councillors from Oakville Much was made of the stand taken by the renowned parliamentarian Edmund Burke over the matter of capital punish ment in the vote on that same issue at Ottawa recently What is not mentioned is the fact that Edmond Burke was defeated when the election came Hills might take note of this In any case why not scrap the whole idea of regional government and get back governing ourselves in Acton Respectfully yours A The Acton Free Press Wed August 1976 B3 BEN UBBINK makes sure Andrew Htnkley gets one sponge in the kisser during a Avenue
