The Acton Free Press Wed November 3 1976 Put yourself in the picture says Rockwood chairman and District By Julie Brace The Granite Club in Kitchener was he activity scene on Oct as the Ontario March of Dimes Ability Fund held its I7lb annual meeting at the Central Western Ontario Branch Board After six years as community chairman Tor Rockwood I decided it was just about time 1 got out and met these people I had fort for so long been in contact with but only through correspondence And what a richly rewarding evening I had After six years I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Dorothy Clark a lovely lady completely confined lo a wheel chair for many years but whose talents and endless efforts as treasurer of the board are unlimited Such a determined and hard working individual I have never met I mention Dorothy mainly because she has been my closest and most frequent personal contact throughout my years as community chairman but on Oct had the pleasure of meeting so many of those dedicated individuals who either hold an office in the administrative end of the organization o- like myself represent a district I might make mention here that Honorary Provincial Chairman is none other that Darryl Sittlerlwho unfortunately didn t attend the meeting As a summary of monies raised was distributed to everyone I was very pleased to sec that Wellington Count ran third in their total fund raising efforts Special mention was made of the great contribution our village had made to the 1976 campaign Of the whole of Wellington County ran third in its fund raising and was topped by only Guclph and On a personal basis our village acclaimed overall greatest improvement percentagewise over the Wellington County Campaign After the fund raising dance at the Town Hall on Oct a year total of was turned over to the secretary 1W5 was but unfortunately money from the dance was too late lo be added into this years contributions in the minutes at at the meeting But you can bet was a proud little lady to be representing a village such as Rock wood whose contributions rang bells for their efforts I am humbly grateful for the support 1 have received from all my friends during campaign events This support does not go forgotten The theme of the guest speaker was Put Yourself in the Picture The speaker Jack Longman a handicapped adult since age has spent some 30 odd years his affliction working as an insurance salesman and for the last 15 years has operated his own insurance office He couldnt stress enough the fact that despite preconceived thoughts of the public handi capped individuals have their own desires wants and abilities Because their feet dont operate does not automatically mean hat their hands will They also have a desire for a career just as we do and with the opportunity given this can be achieved by many many capped adults A brilliant thought in their minds the law of compensation what v as taken away something or someone put in its place And from there they strive to a normal life keeping in mind food for thought that little things mean a little more that its a great privilege to be able to dnvca car in the morning not routine as it is lo us that every day that they are not in the hospital is a good day With this final thought I will end for it to me says all and that is this being the feeling of a nan dicapped adult You are my real friend because of me because I have nothing to offer you Though I personally disagree I believe they have so much to offer if we will reach out to them Judge on their ability not their disability
