happenings and changes over the past eight ears Every October I flip thru the pages of my Painted Box and all the little beings that peopled my life arc right there in front of me and all the goingson are re created bight years seem that long but the changes ihcreve been are many especially over this past What surprises me is that so many changes were due lo doors opened up by these writings In G8 Thomascat And of course there was the hound Rip Van Wrinkle The pasture held my mare Black Velvet the kids pony Lad Grey Papa goose and his family and Bonty rooster who thought he was either a joose or a dog Joining them over that year was Pcpe the gosling Daisy pony Andy ihcferret and countless other things mainly cats The writing of our lenees made them much more because I was reliving all the good things over as I wrote and I still reliving them with each rereading Last October arrived at the firm in Buck Creek Alberta Gord Jim David indl Hips daughter Sue her and their daughter Miss Tansy Cat and Ferret Within a week wed bought 10 acres and head of cattle otherwise the future was pretty uncertain What are we doing now 1 guess the only things unchanged are the acres and David now 12 who is going 15 miles to school in Drayton Valley and taking things apart at home The cow herd swelled to around and then was sold The house has fair bit after we took down one of the log buildings on the quarter and rebuilt it onto the front as a living room Miss Tansy Cat after month of fruitless searching finally found a torn this sum and happily produced six smokegrey kittens who live under a granary and storm the house periodically Our first sad notes were the selling of Ky and Then last month after a very happy playful summer ferret went into decline and died of leukemia Two weeks later another member of the family gone was dead in her box when I went to rouse her one morning So this has been a difficult fall for me I loved those animals dearly and losing two at once was quite a jolt How ever Sue son of last Dec ember Rip the second is doing his beat to fill in the gaps Also there is much around to become Involved in I writing for here too two columns called Out Our Way and The Recipe Corner as well as doing quite a bit of freelance photo graphy And then there two days work in the darkroom of the Drayton Valley Western Review every week I forget to mention my first photo award 3rd place Alberta wide either When I m done all that and the housework I ve been try to get down to some ser ious writing Needless to say not much of the lost has been done and 1 at present try ing to figure just what I can let drop Gord is having a whale of a time in Alberta Two nights a week he leaches judo at Win- field School had three incial winners in his group and is paid with buckets of fresh milk which is great He worked at the lumber yard in town this spring went to the mountains for the summer and is back at the lumber yard now However deer season just opened here and moose season across the nver so the lumber yard manager rounded up part time help while he and Gord and two other friends loaded up some horses and took off for the wilds costing me more to feed these guys than we d eve save by having game in the freezer but I guess that be side the point Jim the year old had to stay behind from the hunting trips this year When he started fall semester at high school he had a two hour Work Experience period each day at a farm machinery shop After two weeks they asked if he d consider apprenticing there for his mechanics licence which is what hes been after all along So be working there full time now with no time for such foolishness as hunting That all quite a change from eight years ago even from ONE year ago And the changes are still coming thick and fast Some days are really enough to boggle the mind The November meeting the afternoon auxiliary of Knox Church Women Missionary Society centred on the theme of Remem brance Following poems Tomb of the Unknown
