provided at Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital for the Alcoholism and Drug Addic Program ADAPT which has been underway in Region since 1975 and extendi into Hills December this year Mrs Norma community The Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Project ADAPT was started at Joseph Brant Hospital Burlington in February Sarah Saunders Medical Consul Addiction Research and the staff of Mail box stands since Victorian the Region Centre Addiction Research Founda tion were consul tant facilitators to the Department of this program for the management of alcohol and drug dependency Public health nurses from the Region of public health services have played a vital role in the project through case coordination and follow up under the direction of Miss Dorothy Craig and the supervision of Mrs Florence Hesson of Burlington and Mrs Phyllis Washburn of ADAPT arose from the recognition of the need In for assessment and treatment services for patients with problems related to alcohol and drug dependency Major goal of the project is the integration of community resources to provide a supportive treat network lor the dependent person This will assist the client to become independent and functional to be able to handle his or her own life effectively and to alter drinking or drug pattern so it does not create dependency and interfere with normal life times When Mrs Margaret Peel St made a visit basis to assist the with specific medical or psychiatric crises and to act as one of the Hal sons between ADAPT and the local hospitals and com agencies Dr Saunders and the program meet weekly with the public health nurses so the progress of patients can be evaluated A group session is conducted weekly at the Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington for a group of clients by one of the public health nurses and the program Referrals of the clients to the project are accepted from patients themselves area hospitals community physicians and the public health nurses Referrals are also accepted from such com agencies as Family Court social services police departments and from churches local Industries and through Addiction Research Foundation staff the coordlnator and client design an individualized treatment program for him her Clients may be referred to their family for Antabuse therapy to A A or to individual or marital counselling to group therapy in patient alcohol ism programs or to other agencies In most cases the public health nurses make frequent visits lo the home of the client and act is case co ordinators and refer clients back to the program for further assess The usual outcome of this relationship is the patient becomes more interested in and committed to further treatment and request refer ra Is to other agencies The co ordinator maintains ongoing contact with community agencies and resources through attendance at confer advisory board meet ings interagency meetings etc There is a built In component to ADAPT to assist in project develop ment Data is gathered from the client initial interview from studying his records by interviewing the com munity agencies at six month intervals The client Is also interviewed at yeir in tervals to if problems became less problematic over a year to 18 month period Increasing numbers of referrals to ADAPT together with their distribution throughout Halton led to the suggestion the program be regionalized to offer services in locations throughout the region Project development is proceeding with the full knowledge and approval of all the general hospitals and medical associations within together with health and social agencies At present the ADAPT office is located at 323 Kerr Street Oakville The Addic tion Research Foundation has pre seed funding of the program on an interim basis
