the environment worst enemy Unrestrained he used ecologically sensitive areas as his stamping ground then wonders what happened to the green open space he used to enjoy This was the answer by a CVCA spokesman to a recent question Why is the Credit Valley Conservation Aulh buying all this land in the watershed The lion was raised following a recent Illustrated talk Several of the areas shown and described arc not readily available to the general pub lic and this raised a question in lie minds of the audience The Authority owns ap proximately acres in the Credit watershed Multiple- use conservation areas Terra Bclfounlain com prise about 1 acres open to he public as recreation areas but also provide an in sight into forest and water management preservation of historical sites and a show case for good conservation techniques The cost of pro viding services for people is high and a great deal of plan must be done before phases of park development begin In the voir Conservation Area the 450 acre lake is surrounded by another acres of forest meadow and marsh which is gradually being developed into a multiple use area with emphasis on the educational aspects that the area pro vided Forest Conservation Areas arc not open to the public because they primarily fireprone coniferous growth The acres contribute to the water holding capacity of the hills which could be susceptible to erosion Included are the headwater wetlands surrounding Lake Swimps may not look attractive but they serve as water retention areas which act as sponges when precipitation is high and allow slow drainage Into streams and the Credit River Wetlands are also preserved at Reservoir in several of the forest areas at Terra Cotta and Silver Creek Conservation Areas Protection of environ mentally sensitive areas has been a prime factor in the purchase of much of the gara Escarpment lands In the past five years Previous to this 200 acres were purchased at chouse but not developed for masses of people because of the sen nature of the area Plants ferns and animal habitat must be protected before public access is allowed Initially the 1 acres purchased in the Silver Creek area was for the construction of a dam and reservoir in the Silver Creek valley in the 8th th concessions of Esquesing township now Hills It was found when further studies were made that the project was not environ mentally feasible and that this unique area should be protected At the present time an ecological study has been completed and a Master Plan for development is in progress is the space on either side of a river which is susceptible to flooding during a heavy storm Floodplain management and acquisition major projects of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority lands along the Credit River owned by the Authority include several large areas primarily in Mississauga where the pres sures of development have made the acquisition of these lands imperative Small par eels of land previously acquired are in several cases leased back to the City of Mississauga for parks development Building filling or alter of watercourses on floodplains are regulated by legislation enforced by the Authority Acquisition of land along the Waterfront of Lake Ontario has been in some cases instituted at the request of the City of auga The approximately 125 acres is tied Into an overall Waterfront Plan The first five years of the year plan have been completed and work is progressing on the second five year phase Land acquisition along the lake has necessarily been costly but public access to Lake Ontario is of prime importance in a major urban area Land acquisition has in eluded property from north of Orangcville west along the Escarpment and south to Lake Ontario As land becomes available and bud get permits further pur chases may be deemed an Authority spokes man says Urban development is accelerating as each year passes and small towns In the watershed are expanding rapidly The Authority feels it is imperative land be purchased when available for il may never be available again The Conservation Authority is preparing for future genera lions in the Credit River Watershed by providing green open space for quiet relaxation and conservation education An appreciation of trees plants and clean water sometimes has to be learned and access must be preserved in an ever growing polluted and noisy world the Auth only feels Raftis finds work for retiring councillors A committee of defeated and retiring councillors was appointed to sort out what Regional Public Works Com Chairman Jack
