auction sale Day care fee up 8 per cent Beginning September l the per dlcm rate in alt Regional day care centres will be in creased from to This eight per cent increase over last years fee was ap proved by members of the Halton Community and Social Services Committee at a meeting yesterday morning despite concern by some councillors that the increase is hitting the wrong people Milton councillor Jim Kerr suggested the per diem increase was unfair to many As an alternative Mr Kerr said the Region day care centres should be operated on a basis which would delete the 25 cents a day administration costs and allow the per diem lo be reduced toaboutSS councillor Ron Planche was also concerned over the size of the per diem increase I wouldn I mind seeing it go up six per cent but I think eight per cent is a bit high Mr He questioned what s going on in the Regions treasury department but Dennis Cnmm Regional Personnel Director explained that day care is a relatively new vice in and that many of the costs showing up now surfaced at budget time last year Regional day care super visor Norma cited rising maintenance and janitorial costs as part of the reason for the increases She said vandalism to the Maple day tare centre in Oakvillo have caused main lenance costs then to double from 1 to in the past year Mrs pa tlso noted that subsidized parents would not fee a difference in the per diem since added cost would be back to the provincial govt rnmc nt It the non subsidized parents who v ill feel the pinch since also pjy biggest share of tax bite she said About ten of those who use the Region care centres are not subsidized she Later in the meeting the members of the Community and Services Com passed a separate resolution that of services for private day
