that and a pigeon that talks Well she did too Her pigeon that talks was actually a bird Have you bird They look like crows with a little extra yellow marking around the head But talking to them is a weird experience They converse with their beaks wide open even to whistling It bad enough talking to a bird but when he wolf whistles at you with his beak pursed it guaranteed to make you look twice Charlie mothers bird had a full repertoire of phrases and he used them In very appropriate places It was easy to believe he understood exactly what he was saying He mimicked my mother and sounded so like her it was almost impossible to tell them apart on a cassette tape My grandmother used to wander Into the kitchen chatting away to her daughter in law when my mother was out shopping I don t think she ever knew those stimulating conversations How about that One day due to of those voidable accidents the kit chen caught fire Fortunately mother and father were home upstairs and were able to avert a catastrophe Mother flew into the smokefilled flaming kitchen and dragged Charlie cage from the top of the fridge The bird was sitting cowed under a haze of soot and ash She raced Into the living room and dumped him on a chair whereby he shook himself and said very clearly Well how about that Charlie had some favorite activities one of which was preying on tea bags Mother was always making a cup of tea with one bag and setting the used bag on Ihe corner of the sink If Charlie was out of his cage he swoop down make off with the teabag and lead a merry chase round the kitchen until the bag burst in a shower of soggy tea leaves He also loved to play with big brown paper bags He d walk around Inside them so all you could see was a bag with yellow legs One day he was marching round the counter in his bag and he fell off He scrambled out of his bag straightened his feathers and muttered the inevitable How about that He had quite a variety of phrases all used at the proper time If asked how he was he replied Alright He d bellow Quiet when the dogs barked and he was always calling What re you doing He even called himself Charlie my parents name is Whiteside At times Mother would have friends in for tea and as they were sitting chatting a plaintive mynah bird voice could be heard sighing Well now dear dear dear When my parents went away he boarded at the pel store with another mynah bird who was always reminding people he was Not for sale I He often embarrassed my mother by whistling at the wrong time He was being transported In his cage to the pet shop one warm afternoon As mother stopped the car at a police guided intersection Charlie let a gorgeous wolf whistle float out of the window Mother nearly picked up a handsome police officer with that one Charlie with us
