The Acton Free Press Wednesday Dec 1977 Christmas meeting for Rockwood UCW Women of the Rockwood United church met for their Christmas meeting at the home of Mrs Margaret McPhedran The house was decorated for the seasonal celebrations of the Lords birth while carols provided a musical background for the guests as they arrived Mrs McPhedran herself led the devotional period with a serious study on the life of Mary Christs mother While Mary and the other maidens knew the prophecies In the Old Testament she was overwhelmed to find she had been chosen to be the mother of the promised Messiah Her life knew a sadness and lone liness as she prepared her Son for His short life on earth she did It all with a humility and love that were the evidence of her special character Mrs Florence Trousdale has agreed to continue as president of the Unit and will be assisted by Mrs Margaret McPhedran The next meet of the group in early January will take place at the home of Mrs Jessie Dunk Following the short business session and discus sion the women shared their favorite thoughts on the meaning of Christmas A poem titled The Greatest Gift was read by Mrs Daisy Klngshott she noted that everyone has the gift of eternal life if they but accept If from Gods hands Mrs Jessie Dunk read of the many lights of Christmas There Knstina Milne seven months and her sister Trudy were out early yesterday morning waiting for their mom to start pulling their sleigh in all the snow on Main St in are many lights which can guide the Christian at Christ mas and all through the year to come all are lights of love and service for Jesus who is the light of our world All can brighten the lives of many lonely folk and even In their dally tasks they can show forth the reflection of that life that shines within us We can become so self centred in our striving to have a family Christmas that we try to buy happiness with presents God gave us so much but we neglect the best gift of all in our frantic spending spree We should realize happiness can never be bought with money What we really need Is love and security and God gives these precious gifts for free to all Our own Christmas tree was Mrs McPhedran s contribution This tree is nourished by Smiles watered by Tears decorated with ornaments of Content and topped by a guiding star of Faith she said Mrs Verna Root chose an article from a book titled Musings It spoke of the unique historical event at Bethlehem when Christ was bom as foretold 300 years previously How lonely we will be said Mrs McDougall If we would take for granted the glorious gifts God sent Each season brings its special Joy but the Joy we have each winter Is the best of all Mrs Florence Trousdale chose a recent news report from Angola to Illustrate her point Our pleasant way of life makes us take for granted the freedom and peace we enjoy In this African country split by war human misery has flowered into love and joy as the Christians really trust God They only hope the people in the free countries will remember them and pray for them so they will have the strength to endure the cruelties of the new rulers Urban sprawl U of G study The University of
