8 The Acton Press Wednesday Fob 22 1978 Schools participate in speaking contests Acton students tops in speaking JUNIOR WINNERS at Tuesdays North Halton Public Speaking Contest were from left Christian Book of Georgetown second Scott of Acton first and Victoria Rodriguez of Acton third Two Acton students were named champions the North Public Speaking Finals held at Martin St Senior Public School in Milton Tuesday Scott from Robert Little School In Acton placed first in Junior Com petition with his talk on Skiing Christian Book from School In Lime- house placed second and Victoria Rodriguez from M Bennett School In Acton came third They spoke on Survival and Books respectively Thirteen students in grades five and six took part in the contest and although there were only three winners they all received silver dollars for participating The speeches had lo be two to four minules in length and the students were marked on the delivery and content of Ihe speech and also on the overall Impression created Judges for the competition were Mrs Dunlop a Language Arts consultant Mrs a Remedial Resource teacher and William a Board of Education trustee from Milton In addition to the three judges there questioner who asked the students questions pertaining to their topics so ihe Judges could bee their and handling of the topic Questioner for the contest was Miss Doyle the principal of Kilbride School In order to take part in this contest the students had to win a similar competition at their own schools Other students paling were Thomas from Com Susan from J M Denyes Beethoven Yvonne Chi holm I Dick Bridges Jeff from Joseph Gibbons Dona Neil Chaplin Lorenzo from Smith Waking Up in the Morning Danny fron Dairy Farming Julit Nipper from Speckle Air Pollution Marlssui from George town Christian School Rhymes and Kowalski St brands of Owls Trophies were presented to Oil winners by Mr on behalf of the Optimist Club Ray Denny and Doug were the for Ihe competition Steve Saxon stalk on Being a Teenager brought him first place honors from the Judges in the senior part of the competition Saxon is from McKenzleSmlth School in Acton Heather Bailey from Martin St Senior Public School in Milton won second prize She spoke on the topic of Marijuana Third place went to Anita Llgtcrink from Georgetown Christian School who spoke on Humor in Creation Judges for the senior tontest were Mrs K and Mrs Knill both remedial teachers and Mr Graham the Last Area Superinten dent Silver dollars were to all six grade seven and eight entrants in the contest by Mr behalf of the Optimist Club The speeches were well organized well developed and of particular interest to people of Ihe seventh eighth grade Graham said he other three contestants were from Monday grade fie sott won the Robert Little speech contest with his well researched speech on the history and safety precautions in the popular sport of skiing Scott said he was in the library and saw some books on sluing It looked interesting so I decided to do my speech on Scott said he has never skied but if he did decide to the sport he would do crosscountry Downhill is too dangerous he said Scott went lo Mann Street school in Milton yesterday to represent Robert Little in the North finals JanineClmons from Mrs class did her speech on spiders She said she was interested in spiders because so many people are terrified of the eight legged creatures Ltahann also from Mrs class did her speech on man best friend the dog Leahann likes dogs and has an American Eskimo dog at home Representing Mrs Scott s class were Steven and Janice Barton Steven spoke on dogs as well He has a beagle named Mischief and told Ihe audience about some of the humorous happenings that earned Mischief his Jan Barton spoke to dents about communicating with the deaf She illustrated some sign language and told students about some of the mclhods used in teaching and communicating with the deaf Janice has a little brother who deaf and so is quite familiar with her topic Judges for the Robert Little contest were were Mrs Kandy Rick Coo and Mrs June Doberthicn WINNERS AND RUNNERS UP in the public speaking contest are from left to John Vadeika runner up junior division Adela runner up intermediate division Stephen Saxon winner intermediate division and Civiero winner junior division Civiero Saxon have winning speeches Topics that familiar all teens made up the winning speeches at the middle school speech contest last Wednesday February In the junior Civiero a grade six student won for his speech on the comical side of waking up in the morning says he is familiar with the topic as were many of the students and teachers in the audience re presented McKenzieSmlth at the finals in Milton ester day Runner up In Ihe junior was John Vndeiku who did his speech on the Canadian Shield John thought of topic after having seen part of the shield on a family trip last summer Books on the Shield renewed his interest at Christmas Winner In the intermediate division was Stephen Saxon whose speech was on com munications between parents and teens Steve said he based his speech on personal experience because his mother is now taking a psychology course and using what she has learned on him Stephen represented McKcnzleSmlth in the in division at Martin Street school in Milton Runner up in the in termediate division was Adela did her speech on a space age world in the future thought of her l pic after reading an on Ihe prospect of space age world Also competing in the junior division at were Bar Mellon Riehard Kllpartick In intermediate division were Terry Loll Michelle Noble Kenny Eric Knrnc and Sue With 12 contestants in the running the judges at M Bennett had a hard time choosing Ihe wi annual contest last February The speeches had to be least two minules in length to for the junior category at the Public Speaking contest a I Martin Street school in yesterday The winner must also he in grade five to take part in the tour grade fours took part in along eight classroom representatives from grade five Even though the grade fours cannot win it is good experience for them for next year After all contestants had delivered their speeches and Ihe judges had retired lo make difficult decision tension mounted in Ihe gym hirst place in the public speaking contest M Bennett this year and representing the school m Milton will he Victoria Rodriguez Victoria is in grade five spoke about books a very valuable and important form of en in our lives She was picked by her homeroom Mr Murphy to represent them in the school com petition Victoria wis in the Smith award on which her name will be added and kept in the school Victoria was also a book that she can keep in memory of her win In second place v as Johnston grade five student also in Mr Murphy did her hard hitting but speech on smoking Melanie says her father smokes but is trying to quit She was awarded a book on birds for her memory of the contest In third place in the contest was Janet Reese Janet did her speech on Canadi and the unity problem that she says we hear about every day is in grade four and was representing Mrs Loch class She feels Canada is a nice place lo live and she wouldn t want to see destroy il Janet las also awarded a book Other contestants in the contest include Jackie Suzanne
