Soccer strength is in small numbers The Acton Free Press Wednesday Jan by Dave For a few months there then Acton Soccer Club president Richard VanderWal mutt have felt like the captain of the Titanic Back in early October VanderWal had planned on over the reins of the league to another member but like the previous year none of the member at the meeting wanted to lake over the presidency The year before Van decided to stay on for another terra this year a despon dent VanderWal he would let Last night at the Legion the club held another general meeting in hopes of finally handing over the executive chain and resurrecting the league His call was answered as the 10 people in attendance proved to be an and interested group When the quiet and smiling Barry Barllett was finally elected president of the league all question of the future direction of the league was answered The optimistic confident looked more like be bad Just stepped onto the bridge of the Love Boat He seems to have good reason for his optimism when looking over the new executive roster The sparse quorum also elected Susan Williams as first vice- president Val as second vice president Sheila Martin secretary and Ed as the treasurer VanderWal will stay on in an advisory role as past president and will continue his involvement on the field level has been coaching soccer in Acton for five yean but doean t feel his inexperience in he executive level will be a problem considering the quality of his aides It only my first try at it but with the help of the put president things should work out well said Ive got my own Ideas and with the help of the rest of the executive got things should work alright In the first genera meeting too was unwilling to become involved with the organisational aspect of the dub No one wanted to become president I dther I thinking about It and like kids I like coaching said BarUett He decided be would give the presidency a chance I want to see Acton go without soccer so I to try out for it president is planning on getting together with the new executive and decide on proposals for the course the soccer dub will take for the up coming season Once this Is done another general meeting will be to discuss the dubs general business sports and recreation Redmens big woe Acton s senior basketball squad will take a win any way it comes Last week Redmen easily defeated Georgetown Friday they beat Milton but the close victory didn come easy The senior are 52 win loss for the year Against Georgetown Dave En whistle was the big shooter as he hooped 14 points Malt Vuck had 12 Rob and Greg Selcott scored 10 points each Despite the close score Actons coach Dave Boycott thought his club was in the driver seat during the second half of the game Milton led by 10 points in the first quarter but we came back We were In control all through the second half he said In with the new Alt over them Acton Sabres Mike Months has a Burlington Coo gar on his back as he bangs out in front of the crease Sabres lost the game Left Sabres new Dennis right ex cs plain David Out with the old packs bags travels to Burlington Sabres captain Dave is on the The Acton minor hockey organization released road again to Georgetown Gemini in October of The smooth skating has once again for In the 7980 season he led the Gems in asked for and has been granted a release from the the scoring department and was named the all Central Sabres this time to suit up with team Last season the young centre moved up Burlington Cougars to the Tier A Newmarket Flyers and played Three losses for Sabres Last w has proved to Acton Sabres Besides losing captain David McGllloway Sabres also lost two important hockey games Brampton had an comeback win given to them by our Sabres Richmond Hill doubled Sabres 126 As In past games Sabres played a great first period they followed acting coach Rick Smith game plan and had a mass lead going into second period When the club left the dressing room was like a totally different cam Four power play goals and some overconfidence shot what should have been an easy Sabres win Wade fired a hat trick in the first period Tony had a pair of markers and Rob Vcrmeulen had a single Coach Smith behind the bench after Jules Rus received a game suspension last week up the loss the same way Russian has been describing the Sabres all season We ve proved that when we follow the game play we win hockey games when we deviate from the plan we lose said One thing definately not in Sabres game plan was to get penalties but the boys did The differeme In the score was difference in goals scored on powerplny In the 86 loss to Burl we had four power play goals scored against us If not for those power goals we might not have lost he said Port or it is immaturity and inexperience The Continued on page 9 Its quitting time dave dorken All those faithful readers who sit on the curb every Wednesday iThursdav in Newfoundland and Rockwoodl impatiently the arrival of another issue containing my words of wisdom will remember a column 1 wrote just four months a to In it I mentioned how I writing a column and went on to describe the agony I go through to etch some immortal and sometimes even coherent words on paper all recall 1 staled only lime would go that torture u when the deserves it Somcofyou may feel this one does Get out the Kleenex folks I know it only been six months seems tike for ever til but I feel it is once again to move along that great The tenure was short but forgetablc Who could ever forget goiring at the Acton Meadows lunch at the Station chasing Tire trucks in the dead of night noon dips in Fairy Lake and of course Jack Tanners In a column much like the one you re reading six months ago my predecessor asked if you would take care of me since I was quote unquote young and impressionable sure I been called other things since I first landed on your doorstep Though I usually don l like to keep tradition there is one I would like to keep which is to thank all of w ho contributed to Ihe merriment There is Robin Inscoe a once editor of these very same pages without whom this kid from Ihe city would have gone bomby Your knowledge and assistance was invaluable The contacts without whom a newspaper be possible made my task much easier To name but a few AHis Bruce Andrews Anne Lynn Fountain DaveBovcolt Murray Kilt mer Larry and Blair soccer Richard VanderWal Ed s midgets Dan ten Mike Morris Shirley Don and Gregg Jerry Veldman and Corcoran bowlings Bob and who could forget Acton Sabres and their coach Jules Russian Then some people who have been kind enough lo putupwilhmeonadailybasis Gord Helen Jenny Cookie Peter Don Carolyn Rhona and the rest of the room To borrow a phrase from my predecessor it has been a slice there until mid November before deciding to come back lo the then powerful Sabres The Swordsmen then had to battle Gems for a release It s obvious why a playoff contender like Burl would want the talented His versatility alone is a necessity to a team hopeful of postseason play What Is nuzzling Is why Sabres would release the centre Last time left Sabres it was after a dispute with team management This year he said reasons are different The year I left for Georgetown was under different circumstances he said I left a lot of friends and I enjoy playing here Jules is a good coach so it madeleaving difficult got to look out for number one and leaving is what I felt had to do Releasing the Man is something Sabres have to do Like Toronto Maple Leafs infamous captain has the right to quit but he can leave the club for another team in the same league with out getting a release from Sabres Toronto Maple Leafs said they want a fair trade for Darryl Sillier President Frank refused comment on any aspect of the McGilloway way but here seems to be three choices at why the club would give him a release Burlington t have to hand any players over for McGilloway so the release was either for cash future considerations A cash transaction may mean Ihc Sabres arc severe financial troubles If they gave McGllloway away for future considerations it could mean the Acton club has all given up any hope of playoff success and feel a gift from Cougars next season is better than nothing The final reason for the trade could be simply Sabres have decided to show some heart and feel McGilloway happiness is more important than any belter chances in Ihc playoffs for their club For McGllloway the release was the best belated Christmas present he could have asked for Besides meeting the Burlington Cougars coach and several players in the recent Miracle Mart tournament McGllloway also talked to some university hockey scouts Playing wilh Ihe second place Cougars in Ihis his last year in the Jr BIoop will give McGdloway an extended season It will put him on a line with some good and consistent hockey players All this is important when the scouts come back for thai all important second look after this season Playing for a team like Sabres and hoping for a scholarship is like playing Russian roulette Some nights Sabres club pulls together and could win against any team in the league but in other nights Ihe squad looks like it should have taken the night off Unfortunately this didn t hold true last week McGllloway and the Cougars lost a to still undefeated Oakville Blades Friday night at home Ihen Trwnihill Thunderbtrds Sunday bad an assist In the Birds game Aclon plays Blake lock Wednesday Acton s Rcdmen swim team proved to be only se cond best in a triclub meet last week Georgetown water Rebels were the ac cumulating points had points and Brampton Centennial had 1B0 points Renata Bnllinger and Mark were top swimmers for Acton won two of her senior girls division heals Ihe 100 individual medley and 100 back stroke was quickest in two junior races the freestyle Senior Edwin Nmaber won the freestyle Junior girl Kathy Coats was best in the 50 backstroke An won the 50 breasts The learn of J la Arblc and Coats won the junior girls medley relay Wins figure fine Acton area figure skaters might not be the healthiest but they re undoubtedly the best Last week Campbell ville Kevin Parker and Acton s Susan Klnal both competed in the Can Divisional Figure Skating Championships the qualifying round for the nationals Despite being in different age and geographical divisions the flu It didn stop them though Parker won the men s seniors title in the Central Division and Klnal and partner David Howe placed third in the junior doubles division For Parker the win was exactly opposite of what happened two yearsago This year yearold Campbeliville native trailed Kevin Hicks through the figures and short programs Practising for the freestyle Saturday Hicks fell and injured his hip In the freestyle Hicks Injury caused him to take two costly falls Parker who injured a knee two months ago also had problems on his pro gram turning a pair of double toe loops into singles and falling triple Despite his problems Parker still managed to finish first in the freestyle to tie Hicks at points each A new set of rules to break ties gives the championship to winner of Ihe freestyle Parker Two years ago it was Parker who led in the junior division of the nationals after the figures and short programs In the freestyle though he finished second to Brian Orser and it cost him the title For and partner Howe inexperience and flu were their biggest challenges People we were competing against had skated together anywhere from one to six years she said In figure skating a reputation can be almost as important as a skater performance Since no judge has ever seen the two skate together they I know what and her partner were capable of Kinal said she had wanted to skate pairs for years but had problems getting a partner Howe split up with his partner about six months ago Kinal tried out with him and the rest as they say is history For 17 yearold Kinal her nine years of skating is finally paying off I never competed in the Canadians before and the travelling is going to be nice she said there s a lot I have lo do to improve the program Kinal her partner and Parker will be com against the best skaters in country in theConadians January in Brandon Man
